Plopcut 1.0.0 RC 1

The first signed release. Plopcut is now signed with an Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so it opens like any other app, and it runs natively on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

What's new since 0.2.0 beta 1

  • Signed and notarized. No more Open Anyway step or xattr command. macOS checks the app with Apple when you first open it.
  • Intel and Apple Silicon. One universal app for both.
  • Markdown tables. Tables in Markdown drops are drawn as tables, and a body that is only a table is detected as Markdown.
  • New name in the menu bar and Dock. The app is shown as Plopcut.

Coming from a beta

  • Drag the new Plopcut into Applications and replace the old copy. Your drops and settings stay where they are.
  • Because the beta was signed differently, macOS asks for Accessibility and Automation once more. If capture does not work after the update, run tccutil reset Accessibility com.plopcut.app and allow it again.

Good to know

  • Plopcut keeps everything on your Mac and sends nothing over the network. See docs/privacy.md and THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md.
  • Plopcut does not check for updates. Download new versions from plopcut.com or this Releases page.

Requirements

  • macOS 14 or later, Apple Silicon or Intel

Install

  1. Download Plopcut.dmg below, open it, and drag Plopcut into Applications.
  2. Open Plopcut and allow Accessibility and Automation when asked.

Beta, not signed by Apple. This build is not notarized, so macOS blocks it the first time you open it. Follow the steps below. An official signed release will follow after testing.

plopcut 0.2.0 beta 1

Drops now read the way they were written, can be edited and pinned, and can be narrowed by the website or app they came from. plopcut also has a new look.

What's new

  • Formatted drops. Markdown shows headings, emphasis, lists, quotes, links, and code blocks. Code blocks show the language, a Copy code button, and syntax highlighting in light and dark mode. Text from Terminal or Xcode, and text that clearly is code (such as JSON), is shown as code.
  • Format menu. If a drop is shown in the wrong format, pick Automatic, Plain Text, Markdown, or Code (with a language) next to the drop type. The choice is remembered per drop and never changes the saved text.
  • Edit the text of a drop. Press Edit or ⌘E, then Done (⌘↩) or Cancel (esc). If you quit with unsaved edits, plopcut asks whether to save them.
  • Pin drops. Pin a drop with the pin button, the context menu, or ⇧⌘P. Pinned drops sit at the top of the list and in the new Pinned collection in the sidebar.
  • Source filter. The app filter is replaced by a source filter: web drops are grouped by website (github.com), other drops by app, and a browser also lists all its web drops. Pick several sources at once, search the list, and see counts. Show Drops from This Source in the inspector and context menu narrows to one source.
  • Title in the save popup. The popup now starts with the title, filled in automatically (window title, app name, or first line). Change it, or press Auto to go back.
  • New look. A new "p." app icon and menu bar icon, a blue accent color, tags shown as #tag, a branded empty Library, and icon buttons for drop actions.
  • Menu bar feedback. A successful save shows a check in the menu bar; a failed save shows an alert sign and the reason in the menu. Any click on the menu bar icon opens the menu, and saving no longer brings the plopcut window forward.
  • Smaller fixes. Refresh moved to ⌘R and the toolbar has fewer buttons, the stored theme is applied as soon as the app starts, and the inspector does not slide when Reduce Motion is on.

Good to know

  • Editing overwrites the file. Saving an edit replaces content.md; the earlier text is not kept.
  • Going back to 0.1.0. 0.1.0 can open drops saved by 0.2.0, but if you change a drop there, it loses its pin and its format choice.
  • The beta is signed ad hoc, so macOS may forget the Accessibility or Automation permission after you update. If capture stops working, run tccutil reset Accessibility com.plopcut.app and allow it again. Your drops and settings are not affected.
  • plopcut still keeps everything on your Mac and sends nothing over the network. This release adds open-source packages for Markdown and code highlighting; none of them use the network. See docs/privacy.md and THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md.

Requirements

  • macOS 14 or later
  • Apple Silicon (arm64) only in this beta. An Intel + Apple Silicon build comes with the official release.

Install

  1. Download plopcut-0.2.0-beta.1.dmg below, open it, and drag plopcut into Applications (replace the old copy if asked).
  2. Open plopcut. macOS will refuse. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security, find the message about plopcut, and choose Open Anyway. (On macOS 15 and later, right-click › Open does not work.) Or run xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/plopcut.app in Terminal.
  3. Allow Accessibility and Automation when asked.
