Hide some items in checklists

Feature Summary

I'd like to have the possibility to hide/park/archive temporarily seasonal items in a checklist (e.g. put them in a hidden area/box without checked/unchecked status).

Problem or Use Case

Some vegetables or products like chocolate disappear from the supermarket during the summer season and I would like to just hide them from the list. Leaving them marked as completed doesn't reflect the real state of the things and clutter the list with products that are not gonna moved for a long time.

Other use-case: I have a long list of items that I buy at the supermarket but I usually buy only a subset of all the unchecked items. Some items are unchecked because I don't have it in the house but I won't buy them for some time (e.g. you usually don't buy the same food all the year or all the times). I keep them unchecked as a reference for when I'll need them again.

Proposed Solution

Mark the seasonal products (or generically the products to hide) to move them temporarily outside of the checklist in a hidden area/box without checked/unchecked status.

Alternatives Considered

Moving seasonal items to the trash but I will need to reinsert them if the trash is periodically (and automatically) emptied.

Hi @estux, thank you again for the detailed feature request!

I am not sure about implementing seasonally recurring items, since this would mean keeping some sort of calculation or database of when seasons change per country or hemisphere, plus linking either users or lists/houses to specific countries, and I'm not sure I want that complexity in the app (also in terms of UX - I wouldn't call it "niche" but I also don't want to clobber the UI with functionality that would be complex to set up properly and/or explain how it works in an intuitive way).

But re-framing it as you did as a more general functionality of archiving items, I do think it can be a much better fit. I think it would require something else you suggested first - multi-selection #143 in order to be more effective. I think once that is implemented it would make a lot more sense as a bulk of items could be archived/unarchived at once, making this much more useful.

I'm sorry that these features sometimes take a while, sometimes the code is not the only blocker, but considering all options and deciding how things should be implemented in order to keep the app as simple as possible - I try to do my best with the user experience and I don't want to scare newcomers with too much bloat at once.

Also sorry for the delayed response, I just didn't want to outright deny or confirm possibilities before fully considering them, and I was busy implementing other things, making sure the mobile apps have parity, testing everything, fixing bugs... I hope you understand 🙏🏼

I agree with you about implementing something specifically to check seasons and so on, it's too much effort to implement this system only to hide temporarily and automatically some stuff. Doing it manually was what I had in mind and the reason I reframed the issue to be more generic and clear. The feature to hide items can be useful for seasonal items but also for items you don't buy so often or items that you don't want to see cluttering the list for whatever reason but still want to keep for a future use.

Multi-selection is needed first, I agree on this too.

This feature helps to mantain clean checklists and I would add later also the Shopping Mode feature, as a way to bring this clarity when you'll go shopping (tiding up the UI and unnecessary buttons plus a way to check only what you bought this time, not digging through checked items from before). I will open another issue for that.

I understand you're the only one working on this and you're making things usually done by different people in bigger teams (like design, UI/UX, coding, mobile apps, bug fixing, testing, communication and so on).....don't worry about this, take your time! You're doing a great job here to keep things simple and not cluttered!
