Release list
Kindle Custom Screensaver v0.5.0
Kindle Custom Screensaver v0.5.0
This release adds support for unlocking on Kindles with a device PIN enabled. It includes the fixes previously available in the pin-fix-1 testing prerelease.
Changes
- Shows the stock PIN dialog above the custom screensaver when unlocking begins
- Keeps the custom screensaver behind the PIN dialog so the book or menu stays covered until the PIN is validated
- Restores the book or menu after unlocking
- Avoids delayed refreshes after sleep by watching PIN-window stacking only when unlocking begins
Installation and updates
Available through KPM or the custom-screensaver-0.5.0-kindlehf.zip release package.
For ZIP updates, disable the custom screensaver before replacing the runtime files, then re-enable it using the Custom Screensaver Scriptlet. Your screensaver images remain untouched.
Users of the pin-fix-1 testing prerelease can update to this stable release. See the README for full installation and update instructions.
Landscape screensaver fix
Kindle Custom Screensaver
This pre-release fixes stretched screensavers when reading in landscape, on top of v0.5.0.
Changes
- Shows screensaver images in portrait when the Kindle sleeps in landscape
- Leaves portrait reading unchanged
Installation
Disable the custom screensaver, then copy these files from the attached ZIP into /extensions/custom-screensaver/:
custom_ss_daemon.shbin/screensaver_draw(new)
Kindle Custom Screensaver v0.4.0
Kindle Custom Screensaver v0.4.0
This release adds JPEG images, visible Scriptlet status messages, and improved handling of images that cannot be displayed.
Changes
- Supports PNG and JPEG images with case-insensitive
.png,.jpg, and.jpegextensions - Displays large, centered status messages with black text on a white background for two seconds when enabling or disabling
- Shows instructions to add images when the screensavers folder has no supported files, and reports enable or disable failures
- Skips images that fail to render and advances rotation only after a successful draw; if all images fail, stops the daemon and attempts to restore stock screensavers
- Handles image filenames containing commas correctly
- Fixes KPM uninstall handling: stops the screensaver before upgrades or removal, removes the runtime and installed Scriptlet on uninstall, and preserves screensaver images
Installation and updates
Available through KPM or the custom-screensaver-0.4.0-kindlehf.zip release package.
Place PNG or JPEG images in /screensavers/, then run the Custom Screensaver Scriptlet from the Kindle library.
For ZIP updates, disable the custom screensaver before replacing the runtime files. See the README for full installation and update instructions.
PIN unlock support
Kindle Custom Screensaver
This pre-release adds PIN support on top of v0.4.0.
Changes
- Shows the PIN dialog over the custom screensaver
- Restores the book or menu after unlocking
Installation
Disable the custom screensaver, then replace these files from the attached ZIP in /extensions/custom-screensaver/:
custom_ss_daemon.shbin/screensaver_shield
Re-enable it afterward. No other files need replacing.
Kindle Custom Screensaver v0.3.0
Kindle Custom Screensaver v0.3.0
Kindle Custom Screensaver displays custom PNG sleep screens on jailbroken Kindles while retaining the stock reading experience. This release adds Kindle Package Manager (KPM) installation and lifecycle support while keeping the existing ZIP installation available.
Changes
- Publishes a
kindlehfKPM package and self-hosted KPM repository manifest with each release - Adds KPM install, launch, upgrade, and uninstall hooks
- Stops the custom screensaver safely before upgrades or removal
- Preserves
/mnt/us/screensavers/and all custom images during upgrades and uninstall - Uses the same staged runtime files for the ZIP and KPM packages
- Validates the KPM archive layout, manifest metadata, package version, supported platform, executable hooks, and generated repository metadata in CI
The ZIP package remains available with the same installation layout as previous releases.
KPM installation
Add the release repository, verify that it was added, and refresh KPM's package index:
;kpm add-repo https://kpm.andrecheng.com/kpm.json
# or ;kpm add-repo https://github.com/chengandre/kindle-custom-screensaver/releases/latest/download/kpm-repository.json
;kpm list-repo
;kpm update
Confirm that the repository appears in ;kpm list-repo before continuing. During testing, adding the repository from the Kindle search bar did not trigger any action on some devices, likely due to KPM behavior. If it does not appear, use the ZIP installation method or run the KPM commands over SSH.
Then install the package:
;kpm install custom-screensaver
After installation, upload your PNG screensaver images to the Kindle's /screensavers/ folder.
ZIP installation
Download:
custom-screensaver-0.3.0-kindlehf.zip
Extract it on your computer, then copy the included documents, extensions, and screensavers contents to the corresponding folders on your Kindle.
See the README for full KPM and ZIP installation, update, and uninstall instructions.
Kindle Custom Screensaver v0.2.0
Kindle Custom Screensaver v0.2.0
This release adds support for the screensaver renderer used by Special Offers / ad-supported Kindles and improves recovery when Kindle's renderer state cannot be restored immediately.
Changes
- Detects both the standard
screensaverrenderer and the Special Offersad_screensaverrenderer - Temporarily unloads only the renderer or renderers that were active when the custom screensaver started
- Restores the original renderer state when the extension is disabled or the daemon exits
- Preserves the renderer state for emergency cleanup if restoration fails
- Prevents cleanup from racing a daemon that has not finished stopping
- Cleans up daemon state and event listeners when startup fails
- Reports renderer startup and restoration failures through the Scriptlet
See the README for tested firmware versions and full installation, update, and recovery instructions.
