Release list
v0.3.40a-chicago.5
Cheaper pixel frames for the Chicago desktop, cell-level damage, and kitty stacking that WezTerm survives.
- Sixel encoder. Pictures of up to 256 colours are encoded with their exact palette and per-band masks (title bar 140 → 16 ns/px, full screen 88 → 5 ns/px). The general encoder is the fallback.
- gfx.
gfx.image(data, {colors = 256})reduces an opaque picture once, at decode time: Plan 9 palette with dithering. The Chicago shell decodes its wallpapers this way. - Cache. A sixel payload is cached by its band phase, so a moved picture is not encoded again.
- Stacking.
- Sixel: a sent picture brings along whatever lies over it, so a wallpaper no longer covers widgets.
- Kitty: placements carry
zin frame order and no placement id, and each put is preceded bya=d,d=i. This avoids a WezTerm bug that doubled cells holding two id'd placements.
- Cell-level damage.
- Rows are repainted by their changed cells, and only the pictures over those cells are sent again. A drag over a tiled wallpaper went from 404 to 128 KB per frame over Sixel.
- Whole-row repaints erase before writing, so a full-width row keeps its last column.
- Tracing.
WIPPY_TTY_TRACE_DIRrecords each surface's output for replay.

v0.3.40a-chicago.4
Kerning can be turned off, local WAPP packages, stable module bindings.
- gfx:
gfx.font(data, {kerning = false})lays letters out by their advances alone, inraster:textandfont:measurealike; kerning stays on by default.measurenow walks the string the way drawing does, so a measured label lands where it is drawn. The Chicago shell (v0.2.6) turns kerning off: Liberation Sans at 13 px pulled "To" in by half a letter. - hub: local WAPP packages open through filesystem capabilities.
- deps: unchanged module bindings are retained during reconciliation.

v0.3.40a-chicago.3
Git sources: a module declared by its git repository and taken through a workspace replacement (a working copy next door) boots offline — wippy update records the tag's source, commit and tree hash for the replaced module, install and the boot skip its checkout and load the directory, and a replacement whose manifest names the repository binds the component without a lock row. This is what every module harness needs while a working copy replaces the shell or the base.
