BlueWake 0.5.0 is for Windows, Mac, iPhone and iPad. On Windows, it's the first build made from BlueWake's own code, and it replaces the Wind Waker Recomp 0.4.0 build. Every version needs your own USA (GZLE01) disc image. Nothing from the game is included.

Install

Windows: download BlueWake-v0.5.0-windows-x64.zip, unpack the whole folder and run BlueWake.exe. Then choose your disc image (.iso or .gcm). To use a Dolphin .rvz, convert it to ISO in Dolphin first: right-click the game and choose Convert File. You need Windows 10 or 11, a Direct3D 12 GPU, and a CPU with AVX2 (Intel Haswell from 2013, AMD Ryzen, or newer). Your saves in %APPDATA%\BlueWake carry over from 0.4.0. For a portable install, put an empty portable.txt next to BlueWake.exe, and saves, settings and logs stay in a user folder beside it.

iPhone and iPad: build your app with PadMint on an Apple Silicon Mac. It downloads BlueWake-v0.5.0-ios-unsigned.ipa (the app without game code) and adds the game made from your disc. Install it over your current BlueWake to keep your saves.

Mac: build it from this release's source: scripts/builder/build.sh "/path/to/GZLE01.iso" --platform macos --out build/macos. Your saves in ~/Library/Application Support/BlueWake are kept.

What's new on Windows, compared with 0.4.0

  • Choosing "Exact" sound no longer crashes the game (#58). If a launch ever does crash, the next one starts safely with the mods off, keeps a copy of your settings, and tells you what happened.
  • Molgera's arena in the Wind Temple has its sand floor again (#126).
  • On a processor without AVX2, BlueWake now shows a message instead of closing without a word (#77).
  • Portable mode with portable.txt (#64).
  • You can change which keyboard key and which mouse button presses each GameCube button (F1 › Controls). For example, right-click can be B.
  • Controller button remapping (#66), plus Swap A and B and Swap X and Y for Nintendo-style layouts (#55).
  • Controllers SDL doesn't recognize (#61): put gamecontrollerdb.txt from SDL_GameControllerDB in the folder with your saves.
  • The camera no longer flips direction in water (#73), and the controller's camera invert setting works everywhere.
  • "Quit the game" is in the F1 menu, and Brisk Sail, Unrestricted boat and Invert camera now explain what they do.
  • Settings no longer reset themselves when the game starts.
  • Taking a Pictobox photo no longer freezes the picture (#13).
  • Smooth Motion (in-between frames) is off by default (#79). Press F10 to turn it on. 0.4.0's experimental 60 FPS game logic is gone.
  • Jump and Run are off by default (#71). Turn them on under F1 › Mods.
  • Elliott's work since 0.4.0: HD texture packs without shimmer, the Wind Waker HD texture importer, Forest Water options, and steadier Smooth Motion.
  • The first-launch disc prompt explains how to convert an .rvz.

What's new on Mac, iPhone and iPad, compared with 0.2.0

  • Molgera's sand floor in the Wind Temple (#126), on every platform.
  • Mac: change which keyboard key and mouse button presses each GameCube button. Controller button remapping (#66), and gamecontrollerdb.txt support (#61).
  • Mac: the camera invert setting also applies when the game's own camera has the view (#73). Jump and sprint are off by default.
  • PadMint and the builder work with the Python that comes with macOS. Builds used to fail with a write_text() error.

How it was checked

Windows was built from this release's commit and checked on one PC, a Ryzen 7 5700U with integrated Radeon graphics. Checked there: the game runs, the intro plays all its sound, Exact sound starts, crash recovery, the AVX2 message, portable mode, keyboard remapping and the Molgera floor. Not tried on Windows yet: mouse-button remapping, the Quit button and option notes, the camera invert, and controllers. Other GPUs and long play sessions also aren't covered yet.

On the Mac, the Molgera floor and keyboard and mouse remapping were checked in the game. The iPhone and iPad app starts in the iOS Simulator, but it hasn't been run on a device with this release.

Known problems

  • Dungeon maps show the room markers but not the map itself (#74). The cause is known, and the fix is next.
  • Some cutscenes lose their music or sound on Windows (#65, #97), for example when Aryll is taken on the bridge. Reports link it to mods, HD textures or the mouse camera.
  • Slow scenes: the bird scene at the start (#59), and busy places like Outset and the open sea on some PCs (#86).
  • In portable mode, imgui.ini is still written to %APPDATA%\BlueWake (#64).
  • The pirate ship's flag may still lack its texture (#69).
  • The Tingle Tuner isn't supported: it needs a Game Boy Advance linked to the GameCube. Better Wind Waker's "Tingle Chests without the Tingle Tuner" option, on by default, opens the chests with ordinary bombs.

Found a problem? Open an issue or ask on Discord, and attach your session log (%APPDATA%\BlueWake\logs on Windows).

Files

  • BlueWake-v0.5.0-windows-x64.zip: the Windows build. It contains code translated from the game, so it needs your own disc image to play.
  • BlueWake-v0.5.0-source.zip: the source for that build.
  • BlueWake-v0.5.0-ios-unsigned.ipa: the iPhone and iPad app without game code, for PadMint.
  • BlueWake-v0.5.0-padmint.json: the recipe PadMint follows for this version.
  • SHA256SUMS: checksums for all of the above.

Windows: download BlueWake-v0.4.0-windows-x64.zip, unpack the whole folder, run BlueWake.exe and choose your own disc image (.iso or .gcm). It is Elliott's Wind Waker Recomp 0.4.0 build with the same program files, unchanged in this release. It needs Windows 10 or 11, a Direct3D 12 GPU and a CPU with AVX2 (Intel Haswell from 2013, AMD Ryzen, or newer). A Dolphin .rvz must be converted to ISO in Dolphin first. This build has Smooth Motion (in-between frames) on by default; press F10 to turn it off. The next Windows build from BlueWake starts with it off.

Mac, iPhone and iPad: BlueWake 0.2.0. Build it from your own disc with PadMint; it downloads the app below (no game code) and adds the game made from your disc. Nothing from your disc is uploaded. If you're updating, install over your existing BlueWake to keep your saves.

What's new since 0.1.0

  • Elliott's Wind Waker Recomp work, merged: optional Smooth Motion at 60, 120 or up to 240 FPS (off by default) with smoother water, HUD, cloth and colours; widescreen 16:10; save states; climbing any wall; quick doors; the fast stick camera; controller vibration; HD texture packs without shimmer; the Wind Waker HD texture importer; Forest Water options.
  • Fixes: the Pictobox freeze; the camera turning the other way in water; the FPS counter now says "Smooth Motion paused" instead of showing 60.
  • Speed: steadier Smooth Motion pacing, shaders compiled on several threads, a larger built-in shader cache, and lighter graphics work.
  • Apple TV builds (experimental).
  • Session logs name the cause of each slow second and show whether a scene's streamed music started; attach one to bug reports.

Files

  • BlueWake-v0.2.0-ios-unsigned.ipa: the iPhone/iPad app without game code.
  • BlueWake-v0.2.0-padmint.json: the recipe PadMint follows for this version.
  • BlueWake-v0.4.0-windows-x64.zip and BlueWake-v0.4.0-windows-source.zip: the Windows build and its source.
  • SHA256SUMS: checksums.

Windows: download BlueWake-v0.4.0-windows-x64.zip, unpack the whole folder anywhere, run BlueWake.exe and choose your own disc image the first time. This is Elliott's Wind Waker Recomp 0.4.0 build, now published here with the same program files. Saves and settings from Wind Waker Recomp carry over (%APPDATA%\BlueWake).

  • Needs Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit), a Direct3D 12 GPU and a CPU with AVX2 (Intel Haswell, AMD Zen or newer).
  • Your own GameCube The Wind Waker, USA (GZLE01, revision 0), as an .iso or .gcm. A Dolphin .rvz must first be converted to ISO in Dolphin: right-click the game, Convert File, format ISO.
  • BlueWake is not signed, so Windows may say it protected your PC: choose More info, then Run anyway.
  • The download contains the recompiled game code, but no disc image, game assets or saves. Play it from a disc you own.

Mac, iPhone and iPad: build your own from your disc with PadMint, below or in the README. No prebuilt app with game code is provided for these.

BlueWake 0.1.0 for iPhone and iPad: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, running natively. The app below contains no game code: you make the game part yourself with PadMint on an Apple Silicon Mac, from your own disc. Nothing from your disc is uploaded.

What you need

  • Your own GameCube The Wind Waker, USA (GZLE01, revision 0), as a disc image.
  • An Apple Silicon Mac with Xcode, and about 25 GB of free space.
  • An A13 or newer iPhone or iPad on iOS/iPadOS 17 or later, and AltStore Classic, SideStore or Sideloadly.

Get it

  1. Download PadMint, unzip it and double-click PadMint.command (the first time, macOS asks you to allow it in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway).
  2. Choose BlueWake and drag in your disc image. PadMint downloads BlueWake-v0.1.0-ios-unsigned.ipa below, checks it, builds your game module from your disc and adds it. The first build takes well over an hour; it tunes the game on your Mac.
  3. Install the IPA PadMint saves with your sideloading tool, over an existing BlueWake to keep your saves, then copy the same disc image to the device (Files › BlueWake). The IPA contains code made from your disc: keep it to yourself.

Without the module, the app opens and shows "Translated game code: Missing".

Files

  • BlueWake-v0.1.0-ios-unsigned.ipa: the app without game code (built from 8049773; content check passed).
  • BlueWake-v0.1.0-padmint.json: the recipe PadMint follows for this version.
  • BlueWake-v0.4.0-windows-x64.zip: the Windows build (Wind Waker Recomp 0.4.0, built from 7ca0cb9; contains game code).
  • BlueWake-v0.4.0-windows-source.zip: the source of that Windows build.
  • SHA256SUMS: checksums of all four.
