PHOTfun v0.1.2 “Photometry Complete” Release

Release Date: April 25, 2025

Overview

We’re proud to announce the first official release of PHOTfun—a modern, Shiny-powered GUI front-end for DAOPHOT-II and ALLSTAR that makes PSF photometry accessible via a point-and-click interface. This version delivers all the core photometry workflows end-to-end, from source detection through PSF modeling to final magnitude extraction.

What’s Included

  • Interactive DAOPHOT-II GUI:
    • FIND, PICK, PHOT, PSF, SUBTRACT, and DAOMATCH routines all available with a single click
    • Real-time visualization of detection results and PSF star profiles
    • Manual star-selection tools for refining PSF models
  • Seamless ALLSTAR Integration:
    • One-step invocation of ALLSTAR for final PSF photometry
    • Automatically handled input/output management
  • SAMP Interoperability:
    • Send and receive tables/images via TOPCAT and DS9
  • Export Formats:
    • FITS, CSV, and basic plotting of light curves and PSF diagnostics

Known Limitations & Next Steps

  • PHOTcube Extension (Coming Soon):
    • Automated slicing of IFU datacubes into monochromatic images
    • Batch PSF photometry across wavelengths
    • Reconstruction of 1D stellar spectra with SNR estimates
    • Expected in v0.2.0, currently in active development
  • Documentation & Examples:
    • Basic usage examples included; full tutorial and API reference are forthcoming

How to Get It

pip install photfun

Or clone and install the development version:
