Mac Remapper 1.0.1

Two new macro steps, update notices, and a fix for the menu bar switch.

New

  • Scroll step: scroll up or down by a number of pixels you type in. It scrolls whatever is under the pointer, just like your scroll wheel.
  • Open Webpage step: type a link and the macro opens it in your default browser. You can skip the https://, so "apple.com" works too. Links that don't look valid are flagged in the editor.
  • Update notices: Mac Remapper now checks for new versions at launch and every 12 hours. When a newer release exists, the menu bar menu shows Update Available; click it to open the release page. The check only reads the public release list on GitHub, and nothing about you or your keystrokes is sent. Installing updates is still manual.

Fixed

  • Menu bar switch: the on/off switch at the top of the menu bar menu showed gray while remapping was on, until you clicked it. It now shows blue whenever remapping is on.

Updating from 1.0.0

  1. Quit Mac Remapper from its menu bar menu.

  2. Download MacRemapper.dmg below, open it, and drag Mac Remapper into Applications. Choose Replace when asked. Your profiles and mappings are kept.

  3. Open the app. macOS may ask you to approve it again under System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway.

  4. Turn Accessibility access back on:

    1. Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility.
    2. If Mac Remapper is listed, select it and remove it with –.
    3. Open the app again and click Grant Access….

macOS ties this permission to each build of an app that isn't signed with an Apple Developer certificate.

Requirements: macOS 13 Ventura or later. It's a universal build, so it runs on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

Mac Remapper 1.0.0

The first release of Mac Remapper: a free, native menu bar app for remapping keys and building keyboard and mouse macros on your Mac, everywhere or only in the apps you choose.

Highlights

  • Simple key remaps: remap any key or key combo to any other, including modifier keys (e.g. Right ⌘ → ⌃).
  • Macros: one key press can run a whole sequence:
    • Keystrokes, and typed text (emoji included)
    • Delays, in milliseconds or seconds
    • Mouse clicks: left, middle or right; single or double; at the pointer or at exact coordinates you pick by clicking anywhere on screen
    • Repeats: the last few steps or a block between two named markers, a set number of times or forever, either before or while the rest of the macro runs. Click + repeat forever makes an autoclicker.
    • Shortcuts: run any shortcut from the Shortcuts app, optionally waiting for it to finish
  • Always stoppable: give a macro its own stop key, choose what pressing its trigger again does (nothing, restart, run another copy, or stop), or use Stop Running Macros in the menu bar. A macro that loops forever can always be stopped, and repeats with no delay pause 10 ms between runs.
  • Per-app profiles: run mappings globally or only in specific apps. App-specific profiles win over global ones. Drag profiles to set priority, and any mapping that's overridden gets a warning.
  • Lives in your menu bar: see which profiles are active, turn remapping on or off, and launch at login.
  • Private and portable: everything stays on your Mac, with no account and no server. Export and import profiles as files.

Install

  1. Download MacRemapper.dmg below, open it, and drag Mac Remapper into Applications.
  2. Open it. This release isn't notarized by Apple yet, so macOS will warn you the first time:
    1. Click Done on the warning.
    2. Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security.
    3. Click Open Anyway next to the Mac Remapper message, and confirm.
You only need to do this once.
  3. Grant Accessibility access when asked. The app needs it to remap keys system-wide. Then click the keyboard icon in the menu bar → Open Settings… to create your first profile.

Requirements: macOS 13 Ventura or later. It's a universal build, so it runs on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

Known limitations

  • Caps Lock can't be remapped. macOS handles it before any app can. To remap it, use System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts → Modifier Keys.
  • Some games won't see remapped keys, because they read the keyboard at a lower level than Mac Remapper can reach.
  • Updating: after installing a future update, you may need to turn Accessibility access off and on again for Mac Remapper, because the app isn't signed with an Apple Developer certificate yet.
