Bug-fix release for the "picking up inside the Android Companion app shows nothing but a grey play button" report on the HA community forum. Card only β€” no backend change needed, works with the current ring-intercom-video release.

πŸ“± The Android Companion app is a WebView, and it blocks audible autoplay

The symptom was a call that negotiated perfectly β€” PC state: connected, microphone and open-door both working β€” on top of a dead video surface with the WebView's own grey play button drawn over it. The same card played fine in Chrome and Firefox, on Android and on the desktop.

The Companion app renders the frontend inside an Android WebView whose mediaPlaybackRequiresUserGesture setting is on by default: it refuses to start audible media unless a user gesture is still in flight. The card attached the remote stream to an unmuted <video> and left playback to the autoplay attribute β€” long after getUserMedia, the SDP exchange and ICE had burned through the activation from the tap on Pick up. So playback never started, the element stayed paused, and the WebView painted its placeholder over it. Ordinary browsers dodge this because they also allow playback on sites the user has already interacted with. Same root cause as home-assistant/android#6578 (Frigate).

πŸ”‡ The fix: play muted first, then go for sound

The video element now starts muted β€” muted video autoplay is the one thing every autoplay policy allows unconditionally β€” plays explicitly when the track attaches, and unmutes itself as soon as the audio track arrives. A browser that refuses the unmute pauses the element rather than rejecting the promise, so the card watches for that, keeps the picture running muted, and offers a "Tap to enable audio" button (Pulsa para activar el audio / Prem per activar l'audio). The tap is itself the activation the browser was waiting for.

Worst case is now a live picture and one tap for sound, instead of a black rectangle.

πŸ›  Workaround on older versions

Enable Settings β†’ Companion app β†’ Autoplay videos in the Android app. That turns the WebView restriction off globally, for this card and for every other WebRTC card.

New troubleshooting entry for the grey play button, and the "How to use it" tips now mention the muted start and the tap target.

Upgrade: HACS β†’ Frontend β†’ Ring Intercom Video Card β†’ Update, then hard-reload your dashboard (Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + R) to clear the cached JS. On Android, clear the Companion app cache if the console banner still reads v1.2.1.
