Implementation Plan

Summary

Add support for importing Pokémon from PokePaste / Showdown format text. Users can paste raw Showdown text or a PokePaste URL, preview the parsed Pokémon, and import them into their save file. This mirrors PKHeX WinForms' "Import Set from Clipboard" feature but extends it to support multi-Pokémon / team import and PokePaste URLs.

Key Technical Findings

PKHeX.Core already provides the full parsing pipeline:

• ShowdownParsing.GetShowdownSets(string text) — parses raw Showdown/PokePaste text into IEnumerable<ShowdownSet>
• ShowdownSet.InvalidLines — tracks parse errors with BattleTemplateParseError entries
• BattleTemplateParseErrorLocalization.Get(lang) + error.Humanize(localization) — human-readable error messages
• PKM.ApplySetDetails(IBattleTemplate set) extension method (in CommonEdits.cs) — applies a parsed set onto a blank PKM
• PokepasteTeam.IsURL(text, out url) — detects PokePaste URLs and extracts the raw URL

WASM constraint — URL fetching:

• PKHeX.Core's PokepasteTeam.TryGetSets() uses NetUtil.GetStringFromURL() which calls synchronous HttpClient.GetAsync().Result — this deadlocks in Blazor WASM
• We must handle PokePaste URL fetching ourselves using the injected async HttpClient, then pass the fetched text to ShowdownParsing.GetShowdownSets()

PKHeX WinForms reference flow (Main.cs:445-477):

1. Get text from clipboard
2. BattleTemplateTeams.TryGetSets(text) → takes first set only
3. Show confirmation dialog with reformatted text
4. Show any InvalidLines as warnings
5. PKME_Tabs.LoadShowdownSet(set) → calls pk.ApplySetDetails(set)

Implementation Steps

Step 1: Service Layer — IAppService / AppService

Add two new methods to IAppService:

• Get sav.BlankPKM from the current save file
• Call blankPkm.ApplySetDetails(set) (the PKHeX.Core extension method)
• Apply trainer info (OT name, gender) from the save if not set by the template — same pattern as GeneratePokemonFromEncounter()
• Run new LegalityAnalysis(pkm) for a quick validity check (used in preview, not blocking)
• Return the constructed PKM

Step 2: Dialog Component — ShowdownImportDialog

Create Pkmds.Rcl/Components/Dialogs/ShowdownImportDialog.razor + .razor.cs

UI layout (MudDialog):

1. Input area: MudTextField (multiline / Lines="12") for pasting Showdown text or a PokePaste URL
2. "Fetch" button: Visible when input looks like a URL (detected via PokepasteTeam.IsURL()). Uses the injected HttpClient to async-fetch the raw text from {url}/raw and populate the text field
3. "Parse" button: Calls AppService.ParseShowdownText() and populates the preview
4. Preview area: MudList or MudSimpleTable showing each parsed Pokémon with:
   • Species sprite (reuse existing sprite helper)
   • Species name, level, held item, ability
   • Legality indicator (reuse LegalityIndicator component)
   • Any parse warnings from InvalidLines
5. Import options:
   • Radio/toggle: "Import to first available box slots" (default) vs "Import to party"
   • Count indicator: "X Pokémon will be imported. Y empty slots available."
6. Action buttons: "Import" (enabled when preview has valid Pokémon) / "Cancel"

Import logic (on confirm):

• For each parsed ShowdownSet, call AppService.ConvertShowdownSetToPkm(set)
• Place each resulting PKM via AppService.TryPlacePokemonInFirstAvailableSlot(pkm) (for box mode) or by iterating party slots
• Show a snackbar summary: "Imported X of Y Pokémon" with any failures noted
• Call RefreshService.RefreshBoxState() / RefreshPartyState() to update the UI

Step 3: Entry Points — Triggering the Dialog

Add the import dialog trigger in two places (mirroring how Showdown export is already accessible):

1. Party grid (PartyGrid.razor): Add a "Showdown Import" button alongside the existing "Showdown Export" button — opens ShowdownImportDialog with no parameters
2. Pokémon edit form (PokemonEditForm.razor): Add "Import from Showdown" alongside "Export to Showdown" — opens the dialog; if a single Pokémon is imported, it replaces the currently selected slot rather than finding the first empty slot

Both entry points use the existing DialogService.ShowAsync<ShowdownImportDialog>(...) pattern.

Step 4: PokePaste URL Handling

Since NetUtil is synchronous and incompatible with WASM:

• In the dialog code-behind, inject HttpClient
• When the user enters a URL and clicks "Fetch":
  1. Use PokepasteTeam.IsURL(text, out var url) to validate and normalize the URL
  2. Also handle Showdown URLs via ShowdownTeam.IsURL(text, out var url) (may or may not work from WASM due to CORS — document this limitation)
  3. await HttpClient.GetStringAsync(url) to fetch the raw text
  4. Replace the text field contents with the fetched text
  5. Auto-trigger parse

CORS note: PokePaste (pokepast.es) serves raw text at /{id}/raw and likely allows cross-origin requests. If CORS is an issue, we can fall back to prompting the user to paste the text manually. Showdown API URLs may have CORS restrictions — document as a known limitation.

Edge Cases & Error Handling

• No save file loaded: Disable import button; show message
• Incompatible species: ApplySetDetails clamps species to pk.MaxSpeciesID — species from newer gens won't crash but will be wrong. Show a warning if set.Species > sav.MaxSpeciesID
• Parse errors: Display InvalidLines humanized messages per-Pokémon in the preview
• No empty slots: Report how many Pokémon couldn't be placed
• Empty/whitespace input: Disable Parse button
• URL fetch failure: Show error in snackbar, keep text field editable for manual paste

Out of Scope (Future Enhancements)

• Auto-legalization (e.g., via ALM/AutoLegalityMod) — just apply the set as-is, like PKHeX WinForms does

After exploring the PokePaste source code (cloned locally) and the Showdown issue context, here is a revised and expanded plan.

The PokePaste server exposes the following endpoints (from server.go):

   • CORS is enabled on /json — this works from WASM

   • LegalityIndicator per entry (quick legality check)
   • Parse warnings from InvalidLines

4. Import target:

   • Radio: "First available box slots" (default) / "Party"

5. Action buttons: Import / Cancel

Import flow:

• For each set: ConvertShowdownSetToPkm() then TryPlacePokemonInFirstAvailableSlot() (or party placement)
• Snackbar summary: "Imported X of Y Pokemon"

Step 3: Export to PokePaste — PokePasteExportDialog

File: Pkmds.Rcl/Components/Dialogs/PokePasteExportDialog.razor + .razor.cs

CORS problem: /create does not have Access-Control-Allow-Origin, so a direct POST from WASM will be blocked by the browser.

Workaround — form submission in a new tab:

• Build a hidden HTML <form> with method="POST" and action="https://pokepast.es/create" and target="_blank"
• Populate hidden <input> fields: paste, title, author, notes
• Programmatically submit via JS interop — the browser navigates to the new paste URL in a new tab
• This avoids CORS entirely since it is a standard form navigation, not an XHR

UI layout:

1. Read-only preview of the Showdown text being exported (the party or current Pokemon, using existing ExportPartyAsShowdown() / ExportPokemonAsShowdown())
2. Optional fields: MudTextField for title, author, notes
3. Buttons:
   • "Upload to PokePaste" — submits the hidden form, opens the result in a new tab
   • "Copy to Clipboard" — copies the Showdown text (existing functionality, convenient to have here too)
   • "Cancel"

Export scope parameter: The dialog accepts a parameter controlling what to export:

• ExportMode.Party — full party
• ExportMode.CurrentBox — all Pokemon in the current box
• ExportMode.SelectedPokemon — single selected Pokemon

Edge Cases and Error Handling

All edge cases from the previous plan comment still apply, plus:

• Battle team import with insufficient box space: Must have enough empty box slots to hold all team members before registering. Show clear error with count.
• Locked battle teams: Disable import/edit/clear for locked teams. Show lock icon.
• Rental team for wrong generation: Hide rental team section entirely for unsupported save types.
• Battle team slot conflicts: If importing would overwrite a slot that is already on another battle team, warn the user.
• Empty team slots: Battle teams can have fewer than 6 members (remaining indices = -1). Handle gracefully in display and export.
• Rental team encryption: RentalTeam9.SetSlot() calls WriteEncryptedDataStored() -- PKHeX handles encryption automatically.

Out of Scope (Future)

• Auto-legalization (ALM) -- apply sets as-is, same as PKHeX WinForms
• Editing/updating an existing PokePaste (API does not support it -- pastes are immutable)
• Showdown team URL import if CORS blocks it
• QR code generation for rental teams (Gen 7 PGL-style)
• Online rental team code lookup (requires game server access)
