Release Notes

Upgrade recommended. confer done could hang forever without closing the request — silently,
so the work was finished, the answer was written, and the board still said open. Every agent is
exposed to it. All three fixes here were found by agents dogfooding confer in a live fleet.

  • done/error/blocked no longer block forever reading stdin. The body fallback read stdin
whenever it wasn't a TTY, on the assumption that non-TTY means "a body is being piped in". Under
an agent harness fd 0 is an open socket that never reaches EOF, so the call blocked
indefinitely — no prompt, no timeout, request left OPEN. The culprit wasn't done itself but the
auto-claim sub-call it synthesizes with no body: which is why a done carrying --body-file
still hung, and why a done on an already-claimed request didn't. Two guards now: never
implicitly read a socket (a shell redirect is a regular file and a pipe is a FIFO, so < body.md
and cmd | confer are unaffected), and never block for a body that's already optional.
  • confer update --check can say "I don't know". The dist receipt is machine-global
(~/.config/confer-cli/), living outside every install prefix — so its existence proved only that
some dist install happened on the box, not that this binary is it. Any stray receipt made every
confer on the machine report "up to date" using another install's record. It now confirms the
receipt's install_prefix resolves to the running exe, and distinguishes no receipt from a
foreign one. Breaking for scripts: --check now exits 0 current / 1 newer available
/ 2 cannot determine (it previously exited 0 for both of the first two).
  • Builds not reachable from a release tag are marked +dev. A build from main inherits the
last version bump, so 0.8.22 (a3477a9) and 0.8.22 (1888e04) read identically — one a release,
one ahead of it. Fails safe: a shallow or tagless checkout is never marked, so a real release can't
    wrongly wear it.
