Mailbox 0.5.0
Mailbox 0.5.0 brings screen-reader support.
The application speaks to assistive technology over AT-SPI, so a screen reader such as Orca can
work the whole surface:
- The application announces itself by name, and every window with it.
- Every list says its rows as sentences a reader can move through and select: the message list
with read state, sender, subject, time and marks; the folder pane with unread counts; the
feed articles; and the report lists inside dialogs. - The five drawn modules speak. Tasks say their bands and due dates, with a tick a reader can
press; notes and journal entries say what they are and when; contacts say who is filed and
how to reach them; and the calendar's appointments say their day, time and place. - Dialog tabs are a page-tab list a reader can walk with the arrow keys, the zoom control is a
slider with a real value, and the ribbon's split buttons, collapsed groups, gallery arrows
and dialog launchers all say their names. - Selection changes are announced as they happen, and what a reader selects travels the same
path a mouse click does.
The accessibility tree, its states and its selection events are verified from outside, over the
same bus a screen reader uses, and the peer layer is held by tests in CI.
Builds refreshed 31 August 2026. A fresh profile now starts empty and opens the account
wizard — earlier builds showed an invented sample mailbox that Account Settings could not
remove. The refresh also carries the improvements landed since the first build: read-receipt
answering, replied/forwarded marks in the icon column, one-click unsubscribe, the
forgotten-attachment reminder, the after-move-or-delete choice, and a theme entry that follows
the desktop's setting. The Debian package is named Mailbox.deb now, so installers title it
by name.
