OpenDisplayScaling — first public preview

A free, MIT-licensed Mac menu-bar app for choosing a comfortable external-display desktop size with HiDPI rendering.

Included

  • Custom width and height, display selection, aspect-ratio assistance, and presets.
  • Rendering refresh-rate selection and verification of the actual 2× rendering mode.
  • A 20-second confirmation window for manual changes, Restore controls, and a local recovery record.
  • Launch at login checkbox using macOS’s login-item system, plus a separate saved-size startup option.
  • Source, build scripts, original branding, contribution and security guidance, and upstream MIT attribution.

Download and open

Download the arm64 ZIP below, unzip it, and move the app into Applications. Requires Apple silicon and macOS 13 or later. SHA-256 checksums are included.

This preview is ad-hoc signed, not Developer ID signed or Apple-notarized. If macOS blocks it and you choose to trust this release, follow Apple’s official per-app opening instructions. Do not disable Gatekeeper or SIP. Building from source is also supported.

Validation boundary

The package builds locally; configuration tests, static analysis, bundle signature verification, and ZIP integrity checks passed. A development build was observed at 2580 × 1080 HiDPI / 165 Hz on an Apple M5 with a CRUA CR340D, while a second monitor remained separate.

This uses private macOS APIs. The final package’s full hardware regression, timeout, disconnect, sleep/wake, and actual login-startup tests remain pending. Read the validation record before relying on it.

Hosted CI is not yet enabled: the publishing credential lacks workflow permission. A ready-to-enable workflow is included in the source. No trial, purchase, account, or telemetry is part of the app.
