This release introduces support for zarr v3 and changes the default mode for elf.io.open_file to r (read).

Changing this mode to read is more consistent with python defaults and also makes more sense because several file types covered by elf.io.open_file support only read mode.

To restore the previous behavior of open_file, do

open_file(..., mode="a").
