The first public release of Midnight Oil — a free, open-source menu bar app that keeps your Mac awake so your AI agents (or renders, downloads, presentations) can finish the job while you're away.

Highlights

  • Sessions: indefinitely, 5 minutes to 12 hours, until a time, while an app is running, or while a file downloads. Extend without restarting.
  • Closed-lid mode: keep a MacBook running with the lid shut, via a small helper that always restores normal sleep.
  • Triggers: stay awake automatically while conditions hold — Wi-Fi network, USB/Bluetooth device, external display, power source, battery level, running app, IP address, schedule, user activity.
  • Battery safety: end sessions when unplugged or below a battery level; alarm if the lid closes on battery.
  • Drive Alive, global hot keys, custom menu bar icons, notification sounds, statistics.
  • ⌘-drag the icon to rearrange it. Signed, notarized, and self-updating.

Install

Download MidnightOil-1.0.0.dmg below and drag Midnight Oil to Applications. Requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later.
