Release-engineering fix; this is the first published build of the 0.5 line and contains everything from the unpublished v0.5.0 (listed below).
tests/test_run_agent_lane_model.pynow stubs the agent CLIs onPATH, so the experiments-lane dry-run test no longer depends onclaude,codexorcursor-agentbeing installed on the host. The test had passed only on the maintainer's machine and failed on every CI runner since it was added; the new release gate introduced in 0.5.0 caught it, so thev0.5.0tag was never published.- No CLI, pack-format or skill changes relative to 0.5.0.
Everything in the 0.5 line (from the unpublished v0.5.0)
One canonical instruction contract across agents, with safe adoption for existing packs.
What's new
- New setups default to a shared
AGENTS.mdand aCLAUDE.mdcontaining a literal@AGENTS.mdimport. The route is tier-aware, preserves bootstrap/invariant checks and follows the selected task route before scoped source inspection. - New
agent-context routing [path]updates only managed entry blocks, preserving filled pack contents and handwritten notes. It infers manifest-free tier 1 and rejects invalid tier metadata, incomplete packs, ambiguous linked destinations and malformed managed markers before writing. - Canonical mode refreshes an existing
.cursorrulesadapter and anyGEMINI.mdthat already carries a managed block, so a migrated repository does not keep a legacy per-agent policy in one file. A handwrittenGEMINI.mdis left alone and a new one is created only with--include-gemini; nothing is deleted. - Managed-block updates preserve the file's existing line endings (CRLF files stay CRLF) and read and write UTF-8 explicitly.
- The bundled skill, onboarding and start-here template now use the same shared design. Verification recognizes literal imports without treating fenced examples or prose pointers as Claude imports.
- Release publication is gated on the supported-Python test matrix and a clean installed-wheel smoke test that covers the default scaffold and a legacy filled pack. The CLI remains Python 3.8+ with no runtime dependencies.
- One pack shape. The full pack (tier 3) is now the only generation target.
init --tier 1andinit --tier 2still work but print a deprecation warning and will be removed in 0.6.0. Rationale: a code map plus search scope gives a current agent little beyond grep, and tier 2 still lacks the routed authority layer (routes, completeness contracts, reporting rules) that makes a pack worth loading; a small repo just fills fewer routes. Of the 52 filled packs surveyed on the maintainer's workstation, none used tier 1 and two used tier 2. - Legacy packs route correctly.
routingnow infers the tier with the same rule as the verifier: tier 3 requires the authority files plus the overview and operations files; a pre-0.5 eight-file pack (such asexamples/hello-service) is tier 2 and gets a route that only references files it ships. A recorded tier 3 that is missing an authority file still fails closed before any write.
Migration and compatibility
- Default behavior changes: use
--layout per-agentto retain the earlier provider-specific generation. - Tier deprecation: existing tier 1-2 packs keep working with
routingandverify. The deprecatedinit --tier 2still copies the shared00_START_HERE.mdtemplate, whose read order describes the full pack first and the legacy tier-2 path second; the generatedAGENTS.mdroute for that pack references only the files it ships. This wart goes away with the tiers in 0.6.0. To promote one, add the missing templates fromtemplates/by hand (or ask the skill), fill them, then runagent-context routing .andverify ..init --forceis destructive to filled content and is not the promotion path. - Installing/upgrading the package does not change any repository. In a repository you maintain, run
agent-context routing ., inspect the diff and runagent-context verify .. Do not useinit --forceto migrate a filled pack. - Substantive unmanaged policy differences remain for the repository maintainer to reconcile. Unowned/shared repositories are not automatically migrated.
- Host discovery and actual loaded context still need host-specific validation; the structural verifier does not prove runtime loading.
- Includes the previously unreleased 0.4.2 diagnostics and adoption-guidance changes below.
Install or upgrade: uv tool install agent-context-cli (or pipx install agent-context-cli), then agent-context install-skill --agent claude. Upgrading the package does not modify any repository; run agent-context routing . in a repository you maintain to adopt the canonical layout.
