~ elsi ~
Elsi is a proposed downstream distribution built on top of ELKS (Embeddable Linux Kernel Subset), targeting vintage 16-bit IBM PC compatible and NEC PC-98 hardware.
The goal is to make ELKS accessible to people who want to run it on old
machines without building a cross-compiler toolchain or navigating
make menuconfig themselves. Elsi provides pre-built kernel images, a
floppy-based installer, and a minimal package manager suited to 640K and
a 4.77 MHz 8088.
This project is in the exploratory phase. Nothing is implemented yet.
Design notes are in the .md files in this repository.
The Name
Pronounce it "el-see" (English) or "el-shee" (Japanese: エルシ), whichever works better for you.
Elsi sounds like a pet, and these old machines are kept alive out of affection, not utility.
