F-Zero Recomp 0.2.0 improves display consistency, screenshots, and settings. Apple Silicon macOS and Windows x64 builds are available now.

Changes

  • The launcher and in-game Display menus now share Fullscreen, Widescreen, Window Scale, Stretch to Fill, Race Filter, Linear Filter, and FPS Readout.
  • First boot defaults to fullscreen, stretch to fill, widescreen, and the Enhanced race filter. Existing saved choices take precedence.
  • The launcher lists supported hotkeys and hides gamepad mapping and selection controls that the host does not use.
  • F12 saves a PNG of the game image at the output resolution, including the selected filter. Screenshots exclude settings, FPS, and notifications. Taking a screenshot no longer interrupts held controller input.
  • Race filters apply from the course intro and countdown, and stay active through the finish camera, race results, and Grand Prix ending scenes.
  • Fixed the main-menu background returning to 4:3 during the Records transition.
  • Fixed finish-camera shadows being moved away from the car by widescreen HUD placement.

Windows installation

Download FZeroRecomp-v0.2.0-Windows-x64.zip, extract the entire ZIP into a writable folder, and open fzero_recomp.exe. Select your own F-Zero (USA) ROM and press Play. SDL and the Visual C++ runtime are included; no development tools are required.

  • Windows 10/11 x64. Visual filters require Direct3D 12 with Shader Model 6.0; other renderers use Original colours.
  • F1 opens settings. F12 saves a PNG at the output resolution to screenshots/.
  • Quit before updating. Preserve config.ini, keybinds.ini, rom.cfg, saves/, and screenshots/ when replacing program files. Existing settings take precedence over the new first-boot defaults.
  • No ROM is included.

Mac installation

Download FZeroRecomp-v0.2.0-macOS-arm64.zip, extract it, and drag F-Zero Recomp.app into Applications. Open the app, select your own F-Zero (USA) ROM, and press Play. SDL is included; no development tools or code generation are required.

  • Apple Silicon (M1 or newer), macOS 13 or newer. Intel Macs are not supported by this download.
  • Built for macOS 13; verified on macOS 26.6.2. Earlier supported versions have not been tested directly.
  • No ROM is included. Supply your own matching cartridge dump.
  • The app is not signed with an Apple Developer ID or notarised. If macOS blocks it, attempt to open it, then use System Settings > Privacy & Security > Open Anyway. Apple's instructions.
  • F1 opens settings. F12 takes a screenshot. On Mac media keyboards, use Fn+F12.

Updating

Quit the game before replacing the app. Saves, settings, and screenshots remain in ~/Library/Application Support/FZeroRecomp/. Keep that folder to preserve your data. The new defaults do not override your saved settings.

Gameplay coverage remains incomplete. The Windows package passed the automated host/UI, ROM rejection, layer, and raster tests, Direct3D 12 graphics checks, and a staged runtime dependency smoke test.
