cppreference C++ documentation for Qt Help - v2025.12.01
A rebuilt .qch for Qt Creator and Qt Assistant. The pages now keep
cppreference's own markup and stylesheet instead of a flattened,
table-based approximation of it — and there's a dark scheme that follows
your editor's theme.
What's new
The pages look like the website. The Qt Help pass dated from when Qt
Assistant rendered with QTextBrowser, which follows no stylesheet, so it
flattened the site's CSS into style attributes, dropped the classes and
rewrote the layout as nested tables. Both viewers render with litehtml now,
which does follow a stylesheet, so they get the site's own and lay the pages
out much as a browser does.
Dark mode. A dark stylesheet ships beside the light one, and both viewers
serve it automatically when their own theme is dark — nothing to configure.
The colors are mapped from cppreference's own rather than written by hand, and
dark surfaces are held to WCAG AA contrast against the body text.
The diagrams work in the dark too. The figures — what begin and end
point at, the exception inheritance charts — carry their own dark scheme and
answer to the viewer's theme. They're also declared at twice their size so they
rasterise sharply on a HiDPI display.
Images are actually in the archive. Previously only the HTML was copied, so
every figure arrived as a broken image. All 100 of them are included now.
Readable type. The site is written against a browser's 16px default and
takes a fifth off its content; a help pane starts from the font you chose,
which is already the size you want, so that fifth was coming off twice and the
pages came out small. Text now sits at the scale Qt's own documentation reads
at, and still follows your Help font size setting.
Code samples are monospace again. cppreference names DejaVu first in every
font stack, and Qt substitutes its default rather than trying the next name
when a family is missing — so every code sample was rendering in a proportional
font.
Smaller, too: 44 MB → 32 MB, mostly the navigation menus every page was
carrying twice over.
Requirements
This needs a litehtml-based help viewer — Qt Creator 4.11+ or Qt
Assistant 6.2+. Older viewers use QTextBrowser, which does not follow a
linked stylesheet, so the pages will render unstyled there.
Installing
Download qch-book-20251201.tar.xz (or .zip) and unpack it to get
cppreference-doc-en-cpp.qch, then:
- Qt Creator — Preferences → Help → Documentation → Add…
- Qt Assistant — Preferences → Documentation → Add…
A note on the content
The pages are built from the 2025-02-09 snapshot of en.cppreference.com.
The version number is the build date of this package, not of the site content.
