Strata 0.3.3
Strata 0.3.3 fixes dragging files to other apps, and a crash.
Fixed
- Dragging keeps working. Dragging files out of Strata (into a browser, Mail or any other app) worked once,
then pressing and dragging only changed the selection until you restarted Strata. Every drag works now, from the
list, columns and the sidebar. - A crash with the Inspector in a narrow window. Strata could crash when the hidden Inspector slid into view in a
narrow window. The sidebar, the files and the Inspector now always fit the window's smallest size, so showing the
Inspector or searching no longer widens the window by itself. - Long folder names in dual pane shorten in the pane's header instead of making the window wider.
- Dual pane layout warnings: hiding a pane's header or status line no longer briefly fights the layout.
Strata 0.3.2
Strata 0.3.2 finishes the scrolling fix from 0.3.1.
Fixed
- Back opens folders at the top too. Going Back (or Up) from a long folder you had scrolled down showed the
folder you returned to partway down, its few items floating in the middle. A folder you open now always starts
from its top, then scrolls to the folder you came from if it's further down.
Strata 0.3.1
Strata 0.3.1 fixes two things in 0.3.0's containers.
Fixed
- Folders open at the top. Opening a folder sometimes showed it where the previous folder was scrolled, stuck
partway down or sliding in from below, most often in a container, whose listing arrives while the folder opens.
A folder you open now always starts at its top, in the list and in icons. - Programs in a container look like programs. A file not read from the container yet showed as a plain
"Document"; it now shows as a Unix Executable File, with the same icon and kind as anywhere else on your Mac.
Strata 0.3.0
Strata 0.3.0 opens up your containers.
New
- Containers. With Docker Desktop, OrbStack, Colima, Podman, Rancher Desktop or Lima running, Containers
appears in the sidebar and shows your containers as folders, with a green badge while they run. Open one to browse
its files from/, like any folder: Quick Look, open, search, and copy or drag things out (folders come out whole;
bigger reads show in Transfers, where you can stop them). Nothing in a container is changed: its files are read as
you browse, and cleared from your Mac when Strata quits. - Start, stop, restart, pause and resume containers from the context menu, the inspector or the command palette.
Stopping several at once asks first. - Open in Terminal inside a container opens a shell in it, in the folder you're looking at.
- The inspector shows a container's image, state, ports and mounts (click a mount to go there). In a project with
a Compose file it lists the services, which of them run, and offers Start All and Stop All.
Fixed
- Run script in the project inspector works in Ghostty.
Strata 0.2.4
Strata 0.2.4 keeps the Inspector steady while your files change.
Fixed
- The Inspector no longer flickers while files change in the background, from downloads, builds or an editor
saving. Strata used to rebuild the Inspector's details, switches and menus several times a second even when
nothing in them had changed; now it only updates what actually changed. A git change refreshes just the Git card. - Disk Usage stays still and uses less CPU. The map no longer replays its animation on every change on your Mac,
only when sizes in it really move.
Strata 0.2.3
Strata 0.2.3 shows what's in your files, right in the list.
New
- Icon previews in the list and columns. Like Finder, each file shows a Quick Look thumbnail of its contents in
place of its icon: photos, PDFs, movies, documents, and any type an app adds thumbnails for. Folders, apps, archives
and links keep their icon. Thumbnails stay put while files change, and Quick Look zooms from them. - Show icon previews in Settings ▸ Appearance turns them off for the list, columns and icons, like Finder's
View Options.
Fixed
- The Text size row in Settings ▸ Appearance no longer shows its label twice.
Strata 0.2.2
Strata 0.2.2 checks your other apps for updates too, and keeps Large Files steady.
New
- Check apps for updates. Right-click an app, several, or everything in Applications, and choose
Check for Updates…. Strata reads each app's own update feed, or asks the App Store, and lists which ones have a
newer version, with the way to get it: the App Store, Software Update for Apple's apps, or the app itself, which
installs its own update. It only goes online when you ask, and only to those feeds and the App Store.
Fixed
- Large Files no longer flickers. Searches and Recents followed every change on your Mac by rebuilding the whole
list several times a second, which kept the CPU busy. Now they refresh at most every couple of seconds, and only
rows that actually changed are redrawn.
Strata 0.2.1
Strata 0.2.1 tidies up the Inspector. If you have 0.2.0, this is the first update that installs itself.
Changed
- Project, Git, Build Artifacts and Scripts are cards in the Inspector, like Information, Tags and Comments: each
has its own header and collapses with its chevron, and Strata remembers which ones you closed. The Git card shows the
upstream branch in its header, Build Artifacts their total size, and Scripts the runner. - Update notes show right in the update window, instead of a web page.
Strata 0.2.0
Strata 0.2.0 is the biggest update yet: the Finder features people asked for, a few power tools, 21 languages, and
updates that install themselves from now on.
Updating from 0.1: download this version once and drag it to Applications, replacing the old one. After that,
Strata updates itself through Strata ▸ Check for Updates…, or on its own if you let it.
New
Everyday Finder features
- Trash in the sidebar. Open it, Put Back (⌘⌫) items to where they came from (also ones Finder trashed),
Delete Immediately… (⌥⌘⌫) and Empty Trash… (⇧⌘⌫). Other disks' Trashes are counted too. - Share the selection with AirDrop, Messages, Mail and more, from the context menu, File menu, toolbar or palette.
- Spring-loaded folders: hold a drag over a folder (in any view or the sidebar) and it opens.
- Compress and Extract. Zip the selection; extract zip, tar, 7z, rar and more, safely (nothing can be written
outside the folder, links can't escape, archive bombs stop before filling your disk, downloaded archives stay
quarantined). Everything shows in Transfers with progress, Stop, undo and History. - Open archives like folders, the way Windows Explorer does: double-click a zip to browse it, Quick Look things
inside and copy them out. It's a read-only copy, cached until the archive changes. (Settings ▸ General can turn
this off.) - Finder tags: the colored dots in every view, the seven colors and Tags… in the context menu, a Tags section in
the sidebar, andtag:Redin search. Tags… and the Inspector pick tags like Finder: your tags with their colors,
narrowed as you type, and "Create New Tag" for a new name. Strata and Finder share the same tags. - Rename several items at once: replace text (or a regular expression), add text, number them with a format,
or change case, with a live preview, one undo and swaps that just work. - iCloud Drive and cloud folders (Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive…): see what's only in the cloud or still
moving, and Download Now or Remove Download. - Get Info, editable in the Inspector: comments (saved as you type), the app a file opens with (or all like it),
Locked, and who may read and write it. - Connect to Server (⌥⌘K): SMB, AFP, NFS and WebDAV shares, with macOS's own login and the Keychain.
- Gallery view (⌘4): a big preview over a strip of thumbnails.
Power tools
- Compare and sync two folders in dual pane: what's only on one side, newer, or different, then sync both ways,
one way, or mirror (extras to the Trash). Copies are verified and the whole sync can be undone. - Search:
regex:for regular expressions, case:or Match Case for exact case, and file metadata through
Spotlight:camera:iphone,width:>1920,duration:>10m,pages:>20,author:,artist:, plus plain-English
searches like "photos taken with iPhone" or "videos longer than 10 minutes". - Custom keyboard shortcuts in Settings ▸ Shortcuts, for every menu command.
- Appearance in Settings: light, dark or system, three row densities, and the file name text size.
21 languages
Strata now speaks English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal), Dutch, Swedish,
Danish, Norwegian, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, Romanian, Ukrainian, Turkish, Japanese, Korean and Chinese (Simplified
and Traditional), down to the permission prompts macOS shows for it. It follows your Mac's language, or pick one in
Settings ▸ General. Translations live in plain JSON files, one per language: improving one or adding yours is a pull
request away (see Localization/README.md).
Updates
Strata checks for updates with Sparkle and installs them when you say so (or automatically, if you choose in Settings).
Every update and the list of updates are signed, and checked before anything is unpacked.
Changed
- ⌘4 is now Gallery and Disk Usage moved to ⌘5, so ⌘1–⌘4 match Finder (Icons, List, Columns, Gallery).
- A cleaner Inspector: every section is a card you can collapse, "Where" shows the folder by name (click it to
go there), and the panel can be dragged wider or narrower again. - The Inspector describes items inside an archive by where they are in it.
- History shows batch renames as renames, and every operation in your language.
