CrossWatch for Kodi v1.0.1

Fixes found while the add-on was reviewed for the official Kodi repository.

Requirements

  • Kodi 21 (Omega) or newer; tested on Kodi 21.3 and the Kodi 22 (Piers) release candidate.
  • CrossWatch v0.13.3 or later; rating needs v0.13.4 and picking viewers from CrossWatch's user profiles needs v0.13.5. Tested against v0.13.6.

Installing

From the Rouzax Repository, Kodi updates the add-on by itself. Otherwise see Install.

Bug Fixes

  • Stream addresses: a stream URL's query string, request headers after | and passwords inside archive paths (zip://, rar:// on a protected share) are no longer sent to CrossWatch or written to the log.
  • Proxy pages: a login or maintenance page from a proxy in front of CrossWatch no longer counts as delivered, and no longer deletes a saved watch; the watch is kept and sent later. Kodi's log shows reporter.failed reason=not_crosswatch.
  • Renames during playback: a profile renamed in CrossWatch while something plays now applies to that watch, its rating and the next episodes.
  • Bad port: a port that is not a number or out of range shows "Not a CrossWatch address" instead of crashing pairing or stopping the add-on from starting.
  • Saved watches: the seven-day limit now also applies while Kodi keeps running.
  • Viewers: a change in Viewers is no longer lost when CrossWatch renames someone at the same moment.

Known issue

  • If Kodi updates or stops the add-on while a "Who watched it?" or rating question is on screen, the add-on stops reporting until Kodi is restarted. See #60.

CrossWatch for Kodi v1.0.0

@Rouzax Rouzax released this 20 Oct 19:08

CrossWatch for Kodi v1.0.0

The first stable release: everyone in the household keeps their own watch history, through your own CrossWatch.

Installing

  • Rouzax Repository (recommended, updates itself): install repository.rouzax, then Add-ons > Install from repository > Rouzax Repository > Services > CrossWatch for Kodi.
  • Official Kodi repository: submitted; it appears there once Kodi's review is done.
  • Zip: the zip below installs through "Install from zip file" ("Unknown sources" on), but does not update itself.

Coming from a beta: install from the Rouzax Repository over it. Viewers, remembered answers and the pairing are kept.

What's new since beta3

  • New name: the add-on is called "CrossWatch for Kodi" in Kodi, so it is not mistaken for CrossWatch itself.
  • Quieter log: routine lines go to Kodi's log only with Kodi's debug logging on; warnings and errors always show, including a rating a service refused.
  • Fanart for the add-on browser and skins, and a description that explains what CrossWatch is.

Known issue

  • If Kodi updates or stops the add-on while a "Who watched it?" or rating question is on screen, the add-on stops reporting until Kodi is restarted, and a Kodi shutdown at that moment can hang. This comes from how Kodi stops add-ons; see #60.

Internal

  • Licence file names and paths follow the official repository's rules; pytest 9.1.1 and ruff 0.17.0.

CrossWatch for Kodi v1.0.0~beta3

Pick viewers from your CrossWatch user profiles, and keep them in step when a profile is renamed.

Requirements

  • Kodi 21 (Omega) and CrossWatch v0.13.3 or later. Rating needs CrossWatch v0.13.4 or later, and picking viewers from user profiles needs v0.13.5 or later. Tested against CrossWatch v0.13.5.

Installing

Download service.crosswatch-v1.0.0-beta3.zip below. In Kodi, turn on Settings > System > Add-ons > "Unknown sources", then open the add-on browser and choose "Install from zip file". Installing over beta2 keeps your viewers, remembered answers and settings. A zip install does not update itself: to update, install the next zip over it. See Install.

New Features

  • Pick viewers from CrossWatch: when this Kodi's routes in CrossWatch are assigned to user profiles (without a username whitelist), Add viewer lists those people. Tick several at once, and each one's playlists are asked in turn. "Type a name" still adds anyone else. See Viewers.
  • Linked to the profile: a picked viewer, or an existing one whose name matches a profile, is linked to that profile and takes its exact spelling. Existing viewers are linked at the first check-in after the update.
  • Renames carry over: rename a profile in CrossWatch and the viewer follows at the next check-in (within five minutes), with its remembered answers and any watches waiting to be sent. A linked viewer shows "Name from CrossWatch" and has no Rename in Kodi.
  • Name checks follow CrossWatch v0.13.5: accents now count, so "Renée" and "Rene" are different viewers. Two people picked from CrossWatch may differ only in spaces or punctuation; a typed name that CrossWatch would read as an existing viewer's is still refused.

Internal

  • New people.py mirrors CrossWatch's name comparison and profile rule. viewers.json gains person_id, written only when set, so beta2 still reads the file. The Viewers screen applies each edit to the file as it is at save time, so a rename from CrossWatch is not overwritten. Coverage floor raised to 95%.

CrossWatch for Kodi v1.0.0~beta2

CrossWatch windows, optional ratings at the end of playback, and a documentation site

Requirements

  • Kodi 21 (Omega); CrossWatch v0.13.3 or later. Rating needs the CrossWatch release after v0.13.3; until it is out, use CrossWatch's development build, which is what rating was tested against. v0.13.3 ignores ratings.

Installing

  1. Download service.crosswatch-v1.0.0-beta2.zip from the release assets below.
  2. In Kodi, go to Settings > System > Add-ons and turn on "Unknown sources". Kodi warns that add-ons get access to personal data; choose Yes.
  3. Go to Add-ons, open the add-on browser (the open box icon at the top left), choose "Install from zip file" and pick the zip.

A zip install does not update itself; install the next zip over it. Installing over beta1 keeps your settings, viewers and remembered answers, because Kodi keeps an add-on's data folder when a zip is installed over an existing install.

New Features

  • CrossWatch windows: The who-watched question, the Viewers settings, Remembered answers and the playlist and profile pickers now use custom windows in CrossWatch's flat dark palette instead of Kodi's standard dialogs. The windows adapt their fonts to the active skin; checked in Estuary and Arctic Zephyr Mod.
  • Who-watched question: Shows the poster (or a "No poster" placeholder), title, season and episode or year, an Everyone row, Done and Skip. It counts down 120 seconds and closes when the next item starts.
  • Viewers screen: One split window with viewers on the left and the highlighted viewer's playlists, profiles and warnings on the right. Add viewer, Playlists, Profiles, Rename and Remove; every change is saved at once.
  • Remembered answers: One split window with search, a viewer filter, and each show with its poster and why an answer needs attention. Change, Forget, and Forget all (Forget N shown while filtered).
  • Playlist and profile pickers: Search, ticks, "Also <names>" for a playlist another viewer has, and missing ones listed.
  • Rating at the end of playback: Off by default. Under Viewers, "Ask for a rating" (Off, Films, Episodes, Films and episodes), "When to ask" (after each watch, or at the end for everything watched, so a binge is rated newest first when playback stops), "Shared rating" (one question for everyone who watched) and "Write the rating to Kodi's library" (only when all scores given agree; library items only). The window takes a score from 1 to 10, with Skip (focused first) and Remove rating, and counts down 60 seconds. Nothing is sent on Skip, Back or timeout. One rating is sent per viewer, and it is kept on disk through an outage like a completed watch. Needs a CrossWatch release with rating support (see Requirements).
  • CrossWatch route per viewer: The Viewers window shows whether a CrossWatch route accepts each viewer's name ("CrossWatch route" or "No CrossWatch route"), from CrossWatch's answer to the add-on's check-in.
  • Usable playlists only: The playlist picker offers only smart playlists of TV shows or films, the only kinds that can credit anyone. A playlist of another kind that a viewer already had is tagged "unusable" and removed on Done.
  • Clashing viewer names: A name that CrossWatch would treat as another viewer's (it ignores case and anything but a to z and 0 to 9, for example "Anna-Lee" and "annalee") is refused with a message naming that viewer.
  • Documentation site: User documentation moved to https://crosswatch-app.github.io/kodi-addon/, one page per task. The README is now a short front page. Every page was checked against the add-on's behaviour.

Bug Fixes

  • Single viewer: With exactly one viewer configured, playback is now credited to that viewer when no playlist or profile names one. In beta1 it went out with no viewer.
  • Pairing "too many tries" message: It now says to wait a few minutes. CrossWatch allows 10 wrong codes in 10 minutes and forgets each one only as it expires, so one minute was not always enough.
  • Switched-off add-on message: Removed the pairing message for a switched-off add-on. CrossWatch never sends that answer; switching the add-on off removes the token and codes, so the code is reported as wrong or expired.

Internal

  • prompt.gate no longer looks up the remembered answer; identity resolution at playback start does it.
  • Rate events are persisted in the outbox like completed stops, kept out of the reporter's per-session latest table, and reporter.rated logs per-route results.
  • Custom windows use inline skin XML with skin-mapped fonts (resources/lib/ui/skin_fonts.py, ported from easyTV) and a shared CrossWatchDialog base. A style test checks every window against one palette and size set. The screenshot tool (docker/scripts/screenshots.py) has scenes for every window.
  • Material Symbols icons (Apache 2.0) are used for the status icons; the licence is now GPL-2.0-only AND Apache-2.0.
  • Docs are built with Zensical in CI (strict) and deployed to GitHub Pages. Dependabot covers the actions and the pinned tools with a 7-day cooldown, and a test keeps the hash locks in step with the pins.

CrossWatch for Kodi v1.0.0~beta1

The first release: Kodi playback reporting to your own CrossWatch, including who in the household watched it.

Requirements

  • Kodi 21 (Omega).
  • CrossWatch v0.13.3 or later, the first release with Kodi add-on support.

Installing

  1. Download service.crosswatch-v1.0.0-beta1.zip from this release's assets.
  2. In Kodi, turn on Settings > System > Add-ons > "Unknown sources". Kodi warns that add-ons get access to personal data; choose Yes to continue.
  3. Go to Add-ons > "Install from zip file" and pick the zip.
  4. Follow the Quick start in the README.

A zip install does not update itself: to update, install the next zip over it.

New Features

  • Playback reporting: Kodi sends start, pause, resume, progress and stop events, plus a heartbeat, to your own CrossWatch.
  • Who watched: works out who in the household was watching, using smart playlist membership of the show or film, the active Kodi profile, or a question at the end of playback that is remembered per show.
  • Pairing and Link: connect by entering a CrossWatch address and a one-time code, or link directly from CrossWatch with a confirmation on the TV. Takes effect without a Kodi restart.
  • Viewer and remembered-answer settings: manage viewers and their playlists or profiles, and review, change or forget remembered answers (a show a playlist covers is marked as such).
  • Outage recovery: a completed watch is kept for up to 7 days (200 at a time) and sent once CrossWatch is reachable again; other events are only sent within two minutes.
  • PlexKodiConnect handling: PlexKodiConnect playback is skipped by default, and labelled when it is reported instead.
  • HTTPS support: connect to CrossWatch over HTTPS; a certificate that is not accepted is reported with its own message.
  • Clearer pairing errors: pairing and Link failures are shown in a dialog you can read in full, rather than a toast notification that can truncate them.
