KML Uploads and Waypoint Mode
potamap.us now has ability to accept KML generated from Google My Maps. You can use this to show driving directions on the screen with all the potamap.us provided data. Great for planning out a road trip! Which is what me and my partner have been doing! We have been doing some researching into a road trip to New England and have even found a blog detailing great stops (well non-ham radio stops). Fortunately the writer has a Google map embedded on her post which lists out the route and all the places to stay. I wanted to see what parks were along that route so I can activate all those states.
Anyway, once you've made your map or found one, download the KML file for it. Then come to the website and click the Upload KML button:
Upload your file and it'll be displayed. You can upload multiple files and the website will remember them using your browser's storage.
You can toggle each file's visibility in the layer switcher.
The dropdown menu for the arrow on the Upload KML button has links to delete the Uploads and manage the User Waypoints.
The site now allows users to input saved waypoints, useful for defining operating locations for a rove. Click the Waypoint Edit Mode button on left:
And then you can left click on the map to add a new waypoint or edit an existing waypoint's name. You can right click to delete the waypoint. On mobile devices, a long press and hold will right click, deleting the waypoint.
In the 'Upload KML' dropdown menu you can download the KML file for your saved waypoints. You can use this to keep them forever or load them back into your Google My Maps to add to your route planning, Google Earth, or Google Maps on your phone.
