Bug-fix release — thanks to @dmaglio for the excellent report in #3!

  • Fixed: titles containing "&" (like "Flatpak & Snap app caches") weren't shown and caused a GTK warning. Files with "&" in their name (e.g. in the Trash) and error notifications were affected too.

  • New: AppImage for 64-bit ARM computers (aarch64) — thanks @steals (#4)

You asked, here it is: Safe Disk Cleaner as an AppImage! 🎉

  • One ~1 MB file that runs on any distribution with GTK 4 and libadwaita (Fedora, Arch, openSUSE, Ubuntu, …) — no installation needed.
  • Missing GTK 4 or libadwaita? The app shows the exact command to install them for your distro.
  • AppImage managers like Gear Lever can update it automatically.

AppImage (any distro):
chmod +x Safe_Disk_Cleaner-1.1.0-x86_64.AppImage
./Safe_Disk_Cleaner-1.1.0-x86_64.AppImage

.deb (Ubuntu, Debian, Mint, Pop!_OS):
sudo apt install ./safe-disk-cleaner_1.1.0_all.deb

Thanks for all the feedback and support!

Bug-fix release — thanks to @fastrizwaan for reporting both issues in #1!

  • New Back button (←) to return from a category to the Overview. Alt+← and the mouse back button work too.
  • install.sh now installs into /usr/local instead of /usr. An existing 1.0.0 install in /usr is moved automatically.

Install / update (Ubuntu, Debian, Mint, Pop!_OS): sudo apt install ./safe-disk-cleaner_1.0.1_all.deb

First release of Safe Disk Cleaner — see where your disk space went and understand what is safe to delete.

Highlights

  • 12 categories: old kernels, downloaded update files, unused packages, old Snap versions, unused Flatpak runtimes, system journal, crash reports, old logs, picture previews, app caches and the Trash
  • Every category is explained: what it is, why it grows, whether it is safe to delete and exactly which command will run
  • Safe by default: only items marked Safe are pre-selected; the running kernel and a fallback kernel are always kept
  • Smart previews: removes only thumbnails of files that no longer exist
  • Stops it coming back: one click caps the system journal size for good
  • Tested hard: the root helper re-checks every operation, and attack tests fuzz it with thousands of hostile requests

Install

Ubuntu, Debian, Linux Mint, Pop!_OS: download safe-disk-cleaner_1.0.0_all.deb below, then run:

sudo apt install ./safe-disk-cleaner_1.0.0_all.deb

Fedora, Arch, openSUSE and others: see the README.
