@github-actions github-actions released this 05 Oct 06:09

Dev OS v0.3.6

  • Split the desktop libraries into @dev-os/core, @dev-os/extensions, @dev-os/updates, @dev-os/runtime, @dev-os/services, @dev-os/compat, @dev-os/config, @dev-os/shell and @dev-os/supervisor, with shared runtime imports and standalone package archives.
  • Centralize native GI bindings, GIR types, React GTK widgets and common file, tab and listener helpers.
  • Organize the repository and development tools by purpose, with corresponding build, CI and documentation updates.
  • Match minimize, maximize and close controls across all Dev OS apps to the Files window controls.

Validation: production build and strict type checks; native GJS integration tests; renderer and desktop UI tests in headless Wayland; real VTE/Monaco workflows; keyboard and session cleanup smoke tests; installed package types and runtime checks.

Fix Terminal losing its VTE dependency after Use latest version.

The shell launcher previously set optional WSL VTE paths only for the shell process. The supervisor did not receive them, so switching to an installed release could show “Typelib file for namespace Vte, version 2.91 not found”. Session startup now prepares the dependency environment before starting the supervisor and preserves it through subsequent version switches.

Installed launchers also recover the optional VTE runtime from the private WSL tools directory in PATH when taking over from older supervisors. System Linux installations continue using system dependency paths.

Validation: reproduced the failure in a private headless session without pre-injecting VTE variables; verified the fix starts Terminal and a real PTY after a runtime switch. Regression tests cover inherited paths, legacy supervisor recovery, paths containing spaces, deduplication and system installations. The live update test now explicitly checks Terminal after switching.

Install through Settings → Updates, save your work, then choose Use latest version. Built-in apps close during the shell restart. Verified the published package also recovers VTE when taking over from a simulated older supervisor without inherited dependency variables.

Material Icon Theme is now bundled for files and folders in Dev OS.

  • 836 SVG icons and 4,484 associations from Material Icon Theme 5.39.0, pinned to upstream commit dd1547babd192e3a307d8acfb2325306b6e89e4d.
  • Files grid/list, folder shortcuts, Quick Open, and Editor tabs/breadcrumbs use the new icons. Exact filenames take priority over compound and simple extensions; folders such as src and node_modules have specific icons.
  • Settings → Theme icons → Material file and folder icons switches between Material and GTK file icons. Desktop controls and application icons continue using the selected GTK theme.
  • Icons work offline and ship with upstream MIT license and source metadata. Clone variants use their base SVG without color transformations.
  • Includes configurable Editor file associations, settings JSON editing, and the Use latest version session switch.

Validation: build/type checks and configuration, extension, updater and Store integration tests; 9 native React GTK tests and 25 desktop UI tests, including loading and rendering bundled SVG icons in GTK, live theme switching, and complete Wayland session shutdown.

Install through Settings → Updates, save your work, then select Use latest version and confirm. Built-in desktop apps close during the shell restart. Sessions older than v0.3.1 need a first manual restart with .\dev.ps1 updated on Windows/WSL or bin/dev-os-updated-session --nested on Linux.

Choose which file types open in Dev OS Editor.

Settings → Editor now includes Open files with Editor. Enter extensions or exact filenames, separated by commas, such as .ts, .tsx, .json, .md, Dockerfile; *.py is also supported. Apply changes to use them immediately when opening files from Dev OS Files or Quick Open. Other files continue using the system's default application. An empty list uses system defaults for all files.

Matching ignores case and supports compound extensions such as .tar.gz. Existing editor settings receive the new default field without a settings migration. Includes settings JSON editing and the Use latest version runtime switch from earlier releases.

Validation: build/type checks, configuration, extension, updater and Store integration tests; 9 native React GTK and 25 desktop UI tests, including custom file associations and changes applied without restarting Files.

Install from Settings → Updates, save your work, then select Use latest version and confirm. Built-in desktop apps close during the switch. Sessions older than v0.3.1 require a first manual restart with .\dev.ps1 updated on Windows/WSL or bin/dev-os-updated-session --nested on Linux.

Open and edit desktop settings directly in Dev OS Editor.

  • The Editor toolbar now has a settings button that opens its JSON preferences in a tab. Reopening reuses the same tab and preserves unsaved work in other tabs.
  • Settings includes Open settings JSON for the selected Desktop or extension page.
  • Missing preferences files are created from current values. Existing files, including invalid JSON that needs repair, are preserved.
  • Saving valid preferences applies them immediately. Invalid JSON or field values show an error and keep the active settings until the file is corrected.
  • Includes the Use latest version session switch introduced in v0.3.1.

Install through Settings → Updates, save your work, then choose Use latest version and confirm the switch. Built-in desktop apps close during the shell restart. Sessions older than v0.3.1 need a first manual restart using .\dev.ps1 updated on Windows/WSL or bin/dev-os-updated-session --nested on Linux.

Validation: TypeScript/build checks, configuration, extension, updater and Store integration tests, plus native React GTK and desktop UI tests covering JSON opening, tab reuse, live application, invalid settings and repair.

@github-actions github-actions released this 04 Oct 22:36

Installing a release previously selected it for the next session while the desktop kept running the older version. Updates now offers Use latest version to switch the active desktop to the installed package.

  • Confirm after saving your work. Built-in Terminal, Files and Editor windows close when the shell restarts; preferences are retained.
  • The base checks the installed runtime version and dependencies before requesting a restart. Failed checks leave the current shell running.
  • The session supervisor stops the old shell and managed services, then starts the installed immutable runtime on the existing Wayland compositor. Running reports the actual new process version.
  • The switch action also appears when reopening Updates with an installed version waiting to be used.

First upgrade from v0.2.0/v0.3.0: install v0.3.1 in Settings → Updates, save your work, close the old desktop and run ./dev.ps1 updated on Windows/WSL (or bin/dev-os-updated-session --nested on Linux). Older sessions do not contain the new button or supervisor protocol. Subsequent updates can use the button.

Validated with TypeScript checks, updater and Extension Store integration tests, 9 native React GTK tests and 25 desktop UI tests. A private headless Wayland session verified preflight, a single runtime handoff, unchanged compositor, working Files/Monaco Editor/Settings and complete shutdown.

@github-actions github-actions released this 04 Oct 22:12

Dev OS 0.3.0 adds a GitHub-backed Extension Store in Settings. Connect a public repository to discover, install and update its stable extension releases.

  • Install, update, rollback, enable/disable and remove user extensions while preserving preferences.
  • Verify package SHA-256, archive paths and manifests; system base packages cannot be replaced.
  • Load compiled user UI extensions at the next session using the desktop's shared React GTK runtime.
  • Package TypeScript/TSX extensions with npm run extension:package and publish release assets using the included GitHub Actions template.

Update from 0.2.0

Open Settings → Updates → Check for updates → Install update. Save your work and close the old session, then start the installed version with ./dev.ps1 updated on Windows/WSL or dev-os-updated-session --nested on Linux.

The attached runtime package supports Linux x64. Existing session processes and user preferences are preserved during installation.

See Extension Store documentation.
