Orbit 1.0 — local project workspace
The first stable release of Orbit — a local, offline project workspace for developers. Point it at a projects directory, and it scans every package.json, detects the technologies each project uses, groups monorepos and workspaces, and turns it all into a fast, searchable dashboard. No accounts, no cloud, no telemetry.
Highlights
- Automatic project discovery across your projects directory
- Data-driven technology detection with real brand logos (bundled offline)
- Monorepo and multi-package workspace awareness
- Overview, Projects, Workspaces, Technologies, Favorites, and Settings views
- Quick actions to open projects in your editor, terminal, or file manager
- Configurable projects directory and editor/terminal preferences
- A secure Electron architecture with a narrow preload bridge
Added
- Recursive scanning for
package.jsonfiles with safe handling of unreadable folders and malformed manifests. - Technology detection from
dependenciesanddevDependencies, grouped into Languages, Frontend, Backend, Styling, Database / ORM, and Tools. - Workspace detection from the
workspacesfield, grouping member packages under their closest workspace root. - Bundled Devicon and Simple Icons logos so every technology renders fully offline.
- Overview dashboard with project, workspace, and technology counts plus featured projects and top technologies.
- Project explorer with grid and list views, instant search, sorting, filters, and pagination.
- Workspaces view with expand/collapse-all, sorting, and the same filters and layouts.
- Technologies explorer that jumps from any technology or category to the projects that use it.
- Favorites, including projects that live inside a workspace.
- Quick actions to open a project — or a whole workspace root — in an external editor, open a terminal at its path, reveal it in the file manager, or copy its path.
- Configurable projects directory — choose the folder Orbit scans from Settings, persisted across restarts with Default, Custom, and Unavailable states.
- A Settings page with General (projects directory, re-scan, dark-only theme), Applications (editor and terminal), and About sections.
- Editor and terminal preferences — auto-detect, pin a known preset, or enter a custom command, with Flatpak and Snap wrapper detection and no shell execution.
- A polished, responsive dark interface with skeletons, empty states, and error banners.
Downloads (Linux)
Pick the file for your distribution from the Assets list at the bottom of this release:
| Format | Recommended for | File |
|---|---|---|
| AppImage | Most users — portable, no install | Orbit-1.0.0.AppImage |
| Debian / Ubuntu | deb-based distros |
Orbit-1.0.0.deb |
| Arch Linux | pacman-based distros |
Orbit-1.0.0.pacman |
Downloaded files go to your downloads folder (usually ~/Downloads), so open a terminal there first. If you saved the file somewhere else, use its full path instead.
cd ~/DownloadsAppImage (portable, no installation)
After Orbit-1.0.0.AppImage is in ~/Downloads:
cd ~/Downloads
chmod +x Orbit-1.0.0.AppImage
./Orbit-1.0.0.AppImageOrbit launches immediately — nothing is installed and you can delete the file when finished. Some systems need FUSE; if the AppImage refuses to start, either install the FUSE 2 libraries for your distro or run it with ./Orbit-1.0.0.AppImage --appimage-extract-and-run.
Debian / Ubuntu
After Orbit-1.0.0.deb is in ~/Downloads:
cd ~/Downloads
sudo apt install ./Orbit-1.0.0.debUsing apt (rather than dpkg) pulls in the required dependencies automatically. Once installed, launch Orbit from your applications menu or run orbit.
Arch Linux
After Orbit-1.0.0.pacman is in ~/Downloads:
cd ~/Downloads
sudo pacman -U Orbit-1.0.0.pacmanThen launch Orbit from your applications menu or run orbit.
