I'd love to have a paid version for this. I don't want any more features (well, I do, but they wouldn't hold me back), I just want the piece of mind knowing that there's enough money to grease the wheels on the project to prioritize critical bugs and communication.
Obviously, per-user subscriptions are right out. (That's why we're here, rather than with Bitwarden, I assume). I'm thinking the traditional version x is $xxx and supported for 1 year, but works forever.
This has 64k stars. Maybe 1/10 have actually used it. That's 6.4k. Maybe 1/10 would be willing to pay. That's 640.
A Rust engineer's salary for a business product is 200k - 300k in most places in America I would think.
That would mean a yearly bare minimum support license would be sustainable at ~$500 per install per year - which is a bit high for an individual. High touch support could be hourly or $10k or whatever.
Maybe as a non-profit side gig it could go lower - in the $100k range.
I would easily pay $99 for a home license and no one would blink at $299 for business license. I could probably swing $500 for a business license - it beats out what we were paying before, except that the TCO is a higher.
I know some projects are morally opposed to taking money. If this took money it may create some bad blood (though it would be peanuts compared to any of the per-user licensing).
But in my month of using this I've been burned by bugs that have been unpleasant for me to handle organizationally. I love the low resource usage. I love the features. I wish it had some QoL updates - host rules, sane sorting - and I'd love to contribute financially for my home and at least one client.
