waggle v0.20.0

Local OpenTelemetry viewer — OTLP/HTTP (4318) and OTLP/gRPC (4317) ingest into SQLite + Honeycomb-style UI.

Breaking: service integration moved into the package manager

v0.19.0's waggle service-install / waggle service-uninstall subcommands have been removed. The standalone binary is for foreground use; package managers now own the service lifecycle, with proper upgrade-restart and uninstall behaviour for free.

If you ran waggle service-install on v0.19.0, run waggle service-uninstall before upgrading. After upgrading you can re-install via your package manager.

Run waggle as a service

Linux (.deb / .rpm / .apk / Arch) — the package now ships:

  • /lib/systemd/system/waggle.service (hardened unit: dedicated waggle user, NoNewPrivileges, ProtectSystem=strict, state under /var/lib/waggle/)
  • Maintainer scripts that create the user, enable+start on first install, restart on upgrade if running, and stop+disable on remove
sudo dpkg -i waggle_0.20.0_amd64.deb
systemctl status waggle # active (running) on first install

macOS / Linuxbrew — the tap now ships a formula instead of a cask, so brew services works:

brew install danielloader/tap/waggle # foreground
brew services start waggle # LaunchAgent (logs: $(brew --prefix)/var/log/waggle.log)
brew services restart waggle # after upgrade

Binary / Docker — no service integration. Run them however you'd run any other foreground process.

Homebrew tap migrated from cask to formula

The install command changed:

# Before (v0.19.0 and earlier)
brew install --cask danielloader/tap/waggle

# Now (v0.20.0+)
brew install danielloader/tap/waggle

If you previously installed via the cask, brew uninstall --cask waggle first, then brew install danielloader/tap/waggle.

Changelog

  • feat(packaging): system-managed service via deb/rpm/apk/Arch and Homebrew formula (#45)

Install

Homebrew (macOS, Linuxbrew)

brew install danielloader/tap/waggle # foreground
brew services start waggle # or run as a LaunchAgent (logs: $(brew --prefix)/var/log/waggle.log)

Binary — download from the assets below, extract, and run:

./waggle

Linux packages — .deb, .rpm, .apk, and Arch .pkg.tar.zst (amd64 + arm64) are in the assets below; they install to /usr/bin/waggle, ship a systemd unit, and auto-start the service on install (unsigned):

sudo dpkg -i waggle_0.20.0_amd64.deb # Debian/Ubuntu
sudo rpm -i waggle-0.20.0-1.x86_64.rpm # Fedora/RHEL/openSUSE
sudo apk add --allow-untrusted waggle_0.20.0_x86_64.apk # Alpine
sudo pacman -U waggle-0.20.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst # Arch
systemctl status waggle # check it's up

Docker

docker run --rm -p 4318:4318 -p 4317:4317 -v $(pwd)/data:/data ghcr.io/danielloader/waggle:0.20.0

Then point any OTLP exporter at http://localhost:4318 (HTTP) or localhost:4317 (gRPC), and open the UI in your browser.
