KOBridge 0.6.1
KOBridge 0.6.1 signs the Mac app with a fixed certificate, so macOS keeps the Local Network permission when the app updates.
Fixes
- Before this version, macOS treated every new build as a different app and asked again for the Local Network permission. When the permission was missing, the app showed "Kindle offline" even though the Kindle was reachable. From 0.6.1 on, updates keep the permission. You need to allow it once more after updating to 0.6.1, in System Settings, Privacy & Security, Local Network.
Install
If you have 0.6.0, use the update button in the sidebar. Otherwise, on a Mac, download KOBridge_0.6.1_aarch64.dmg and replace the app in Applications. On Linux, install the .deb with sudo apt install ./KOBridge_0.6.1_amd64.deb, or make the .AppImage executable and run it. GitHub Actions attaches both a few minutes after the release goes up.
The SHA-256 of the .dmg is 252c234c4638e7d7ee5852d6ba9ca5361e0729c5c743f8f7ca00d6f883e7dcbc.
KOBridge 0.6.0
KOBridge 0.6.0 adds a Files view that browses and changes everything on the Kindle, a Cable panel that turns on USB file transfer (MTP) while KOReader keeps running, and in-app updates.
Files
- The Files view lists all of the Kindle's storage (
/mnt/us) and works like Finder. You can rename with a right click, move by dragging, delete, make folders, and drop files or folders from your computer to upload them. - When you rename, move or delete a book, the app does the same to its
.sdrfolder, so KOReader keeps your progress and highlights. A.sdrfolder shared with another format of the same book stays where it is. - The system folders (
documents, koreader, systemand the rest) can't be renamed, moved or deleted. Insidekoreader/, onlypatches, plugins, fonts, styletweaks, screenshotsanddatacan change. - Nothing is ever overwritten. If a file with the same name already exists, the app leaves both files as they are and tells you.
USB file transfer while KOReader runs
- Files has a Cable panel. With the Kindle plugged into the computer, Connect puts the Kindle in MTP mode without leaving KOReader, and then opens your MTP app (KindleMTP, OpenMTP or Android File Transfer, which you can choose in Settings).
- It uses the same steps as the kindlemtp.koplugin KOReader plugin, and the two share a lock file, so only one of them runs a session at a time.
- Connect refuses while a book is open, because the computer could replace the file KOReader is reading. Disconnect runs
syncand removes what an interrupted copy left behind. - It has been tested on a Kindle Paperwhite (12th generation) on firmware 5.18.5. Firmware 5.19 changed how MTP starts, so it doesn't work there yet.
Updates
- The app checks GitHub for a new version when it opens. When there is one, a button in the sidebar downloads it, checks its signature, installs it and restarts the app. Settings shows the version and has a "Check for updates" button.
- Updating in place works from this version on. To get 0.6.0 itself, download it by hand one last time.
Install
On a Mac, download KOBridge_0.6.0_aarch64.dmg and replace the app in Applications. The app isn't signed, so every new version asks again for the Local Network permission, and you need to allow it. On Linux, install the .deb with sudo apt install ./KOBridge_0.6.0_amd64.deb, or make the .AppImage executable and run it. GitHub Actions attaches both a few minutes after the release goes up.
The SHA-256 of the .dmg is 74335c79ce32ded95953adcd711bc03fb4e19a7135af19c50548558956e10707.
KOBridge 0.5.0
KOBridge 0.5.0 adds a Store view that installs, updates and removes KOReader plugins, user patches and fonts from the Storefront catalog, and it makes a full backup before every change.
Store
- The Store lists the Storefront catalog in three tabs, Plugins, Patches and Fonts, with search, sorting by stars or by last update, and a filter for what's installed. The catalog has about 700 plugins, 700 patches and 21 fonts, and the app keeps a copy so the list opens without internet.
- Every install, update or removal starts with a full backup that also includes the plugin or font folder the Store is about to replace. The backup shows up in the Backup view.
- The app sends a plugin into a new folder and swaps it with the old one only after the copy finished, so a dropped Wi-Fi connection leaves the old version working.
- The app records each install in
Storefront_installs.lua, the same list that Storefront keeps on the Kindle, so Storefront shows the same installs and updates. - The Store only changes plugins while KOReader is closed, because KOReader rewrites Storefront's list when it exits.
Downloads
The app downloads with aria2. It uses aria2c from your PATH when you have one, and otherwise the copy inside the app, which is an unmodified build of aria2 1.37.0 under the GPL 2.0 or later. Its license is in licenses/aria2-COPYING inside the app, and scripts/build-aria2.sh shows how it's built.
Fixes
- When none of the IPs in
~/.ssh/configanswers, Settings now says the Kindle doesn't answer, instead of saying thekindleentry is missing.
Install
On a Mac, download KOBridge_0.5.0_aarch64.dmg and replace the app in Applications. The app isn't signed, so every new version asks again for the Local Network permission, and you need to allow it. On Linux, install the .deb with sudo apt install ./KOBridge_0.5.0_amd64.deb, or make the .AppImage executable and run it. GitHub Actions attaches both a few minutes after the release goes up.
The SHA-256 of the .dmg is d10119cb5015e4ffe877b204f59aaa1e75642b21a9a73b0b0fe8f34aa43785b1.
KOBridge 0.4.1
KOBridge 0.4.1 makes the live log faster and stops a few actions from freezing the window.
Changes
- The live log keeps up with heavy output. At 300 new lines per frame, each frame now takes 16.7 ms instead of 33.5 ms, so the view scrolls at 60 fps instead of 30.
- Export to Obsidian, Open in Anki, Install over USB and the backup list now run off the window's thread, so the window stays responsive while Anki starts or the key is copied to the Kindle.
Install
On a Mac, download KOBridge_0.4.1_aarch64.dmg and replace the app in Applications. The app isn't signed, so every new version asks again for the Local Network permission, and you need to allow it. On Linux, install the .deb with sudo apt install ./KOBridge_0.4.1_amd64.deb, or make the .AppImage executable and run it. GitHub Actions attaches both a few minutes after the release goes up.
The SHA-256 of the .dmg is 2866c51d9dfc90cfc066b8aa07d1a31b37699a2c0ccd17f1397b4ebe6be099af.
KOBridge 0.4.0
KOBridge 0.4.0 adds a Settings view that helps you set up the SSH connection, and a first build for Linux.
Changes
- Settings opens with ⌘, on a Mac and Ctrl+, on Linux, or from the gear at the bottom of the sidebar. It holds the language switch, which used to sit in the sidebar.
- Settings walks through the SSH setup in four steps:
- It creates the key
~/.ssh/id_ed25519_kindle, copies the public key, and installs it on a Kindle connected over USB. - It adds a
kindleentry at the top of~/.ssh/config, after it saves a copy of the old file as~/.ssh/config.kob.bak. If the file already nameskindle, it leaves the file alone. - It tests the first connection and saves the fingerprint of the Kindle, which the app couldn't do before.
- It creates the key
- When
~/.ssh/confighas nokindleentry, the sidebar now tells you to open Settings. - The sidebar view that edits
defaults.custom.luaandsettings.reader.luais now called KOReader files, so it doesn't clash with the new Settings.
Linux
This release has a .deb for Debian and Ubuntu and an .AppImage for other distributions, both for x86_64. GitHub Actions builds them on Ubuntu 22.04 and attaches them a few minutes after the release goes up. The Linux build passed the type check, the unit tests and the bundle step in CI, but nobody has run it on a real Linux desktop with a Kindle yet, so please open an issue if something fails.
Install
On a Mac, download KOBridge_0.4.0_aarch64.dmg and replace the app in Applications. The app isn't signed, so every new version asks again for the Local Network permission, and you need to allow it. On Linux, install the .deb with sudo apt install ./KOBridge_0.4.0_amd64.deb, or make the .AppImage executable and run it. The setup steps are in the README.
The SHA-256 of the .dmg is 149a8ba579ab561546123f03eee0cb629873e325ece98ae3e83f0d0ec5e69c35.
KOBridge 0.3.0
KOBridge 0.3.0 is in English by default, and you can switch it to Spanish.
Changes
- Every screen, button and error message is in English. To use Spanish, pick Español at the bottom of the sidebar. The app saves your choice and changes the text right away, without a restart.
- Dates, times and decimals follow the language you pick, e.g. "Oct 5, 12:48 PM" and "5.1 GB" in English, and "5 oct, 12:48" and "5,1 GB" in Spanish.
- The last label on the reading chart no longer gets cut off, and the Send books header has its missing space back.
- The README screenshots now show the English interface.
The Markdown that the app writes into your Obsidian vault keeps its Spanish headings, e.g. "## Subrayados" and "Libros.md", because re-export uses them to merge new highlights into existing notes.
If you used 0.2.0 in Spanish, the app opens in English after the update. Pick Español once and it stays that way.
Install
Download KOBridge_0.3.0_aarch64.dmg and replace the app in Applications. The app isn't signed, so every new version asks again for the Local Network permission, and you need to allow it. The setup steps are in the README.
The .dmg only runs on Macs with Apple Silicon. Its SHA-256 is 98e7b161095917f3dde54887d12a6ed8a271e6f45fddc6a9d5ed792b6d8a1517.
KOBridge 0.2.0
KOBridge 0.2.0 adds a merge-safe Obsidian export, note summaries written by Claude, and Anki flashcards made from your KOReader highlights.
Changes
- Exporting to Obsidian no longer rewrites your notes. Each highlight gets an Obsidian block id (
^kob-…), and a second export only adds the new highlights at the end of the note, so text you wrote by hand stays where it is. - Subrayados finds your vaults from Obsidian's own list, writes a
Libros.mdindex with progress and last reading date, and addslast_readandread_timeto each note from KOReader's statistics. - Notes exported with 0.1.1 have no block ids. The first export renames each one to
<title> (anterior).mdand writes a new note next to it. - Enriquecer runs Claude Code on the notes you pick. Claude adds a summary, tags and links to related notes in your vault, using Haiku, Sonnet, Opus or Fable. In a test with Haiku, one note took 12 seconds.
- Tarjetas Anki asks Claude for question and answer cards and saves them in
~/Downloads/KOReader Anki <date>.txt, with one deck per book. Each card id comes from its highlight, so importing the same book again updates the cards in Anki instead of duplicating them. - The reading chart no longer draws the last weekly date on top of "hoy", and the sidebar shows the missing space again between the battery level and the free space.
- The README is now in English and has screenshots.
Install
Download KOBridge_0.2.0_aarch64.dmg and replace the app in Applications. The app isn't signed, so every new version asks again for the Local Network permission, and you need to allow it. The setup steps are in the README.
Enriquecer and Tarjetas Anki need Claude Code signed in. To import the cards, open Anki once to create your profile, then press Abrir en Anki.
The .dmg only runs on Macs with Apple Silicon. Its SHA-256 is cc9e8061525e9f53dfbfbcbdb200857180382591b429cf49295e3c2c36328688.
KOBridge 0.1.1
