Field modes
Every field is in one of three modes:
| Mode | Its sensor is recorded in the log | Sent to PVOutput | Read from PVOutput |
|---|---|---|---|
| Send (active) | yes | yes | no |
| Record only (passive) | yes | no, unless chosen for a reupload or import | no |
| Download | yes, if it has a sensor | no | yes, into <field> <label> from PVOutput |
A field has two independent things:
- Its source: a sensor, a fixed value, or nothing (added with Add field → From PVOutput). Send and Record only need a source; Download does not.
- Its mode: what is done with it now.
Changing the mode never loses the source or any setting, so switching back restores everything.
- The field's select on the device page (under Configuration), e.g. v5 Ambient.
Usable in automations with
select.select_option. - Configure → Fields: every field on one page.
- Add field: a sensor or fixed value starts in Send (or Record only if Active is off); From PVOutput starts in Download.
Saving reloads the site, which takes a few seconds.
| Field | Select on the device page | Configure → Fields |
|---|---|---|
| Sensor or fixed value, v1-v6 | Send, Record only, Download | the same |
| Sensor or fixed value, v7-v12 | Send, Record only, + Download on a donor account | the same |
| Battery field b1-b6 | Send, Record only | the same |
| No source (added from PVOutput) | Download only | all three; Send or Record only asks for a sensor or fixed value next |
Battery fields cannot be downloaded: PVOutput does not return them. A select cannot ask questions, so a field without a source offers only Download there until it gets one under Configure → Fields or Edit field.
Both places check the choice again when saving, against the field and account as they are then: a page left open while the account stopped being a donor cannot set what is no longer possible.
Record only, to build history first. Add a new sensor as Record only, check its values for a few days in the field sensor's attributes, then set it to Send and reupload the days it recorded. Or keep it passive and tick it under Also send passive fields for one reupload.
Download, to see what PVOutput has. For values another uploader sends (e.g. IoTaWatt sending v1/v2), set the field to Download: you get a live from PVOutput sensor, and its past from PVOutput history.
- Send → Download: sending stops and the download sensor appears. The field's own sensor keeps being recorded (never sent), so switching back leaves no gap and Reupload history can send it.
- Download → Send: the download sensor goes away and the kept source is used again.
- From PVOutput → Send: you are asked for a source; its log starts then. Import earlier days from Home Assistant if needed.
- To stop recording a downloaded field's sensor, remove the field and add it again with From PVOutput.
Fields that are not sent (Record only, Download) or not configured are left empty in statuses, so PVOutput keeps what another uploader sent for the same time. See Recipes → IoTaWatt and this integration together.
