1.6.5-findmode.2: Test mode for BLE Find Mode

Choose a tag to compare

@dariodf dariodf released this 28 Sep 06:40

CrossPoint 1.6.5 for the Xteink X4 Pro, plus BLE Find Mode: a lost reader can be found with your phone.

While the reader sleeps, it wakes every few minutes and listens for half a second for a secret code that only your phone knows. When it hears it, it shows "BLE Find Mode activated. Press power to close." and broadcasts CP-FIND, so a Bluetooth scanner on the phone can follow the signal strength to it. The broadcast lasts while your phone keeps calling (up to 10 minutes) and stops 5 to 15 s after your phone stops. The reader stays silent to everyone else: it only listens until your phone calls.

What's new since 1.6.5-findmode.1

  • Test mode on the BLE Find Mode page checks your phone setup in seconds: the reader restarts, listens for up to a minute, shows your phone's signal when it hears it and broadcasts CP-FIND like a real find, then goes back to Settings with the result on the row.
  • The page shows only rows that do something, and the steps say the reader listens only while asleep.
  • Readers on 1.6.5-findmode.1 get this update over Wi-Fi: Settings > System > Check for Updates.

Install

  1. Download crosspoint-1.6.5-findmode.2-x4pro.bin below.
  2. Copy it to the SD card (the reader's File Transfer USB drive mode puts the card on your computer).
  3. On the reader: Settings > System > SD Card Firmware Update, pick the file, confirm.

The update writes the other app slot, so your current firmware stays until the next update. To go back to official CrossPoint, flash an official release the same way. Down + power opens the same picker in recovery mode.

Use it

  1. Settings > System > BLE Find Mode, turn it on. The page shows your code and its QR.
  2. Scan the QR with your phone's Quick Settings QR scanner to copy the code.
  3. In nRF Connect: Advertiser, tap +, then Add record > Service UUID and paste the code (lowercase, with dashes). Leave Connectable and Scannable off, set the interval to 160 (100 ms) and TX power to the highest it allows.
  4. Tap Test mode and switch the advertiser on: the reader shows your phone's signal and CP-FIND appears in nRF Connect's Scanner. Switch the advertiser off again.
  5. When the reader is lost, switch that advertiser on and look for CP-FIND in nRF Connect's Scanner. Swipe right on it for the signal graph.

Listen every (1 to 5 minutes, 2 by default) and Stop below battery (10, 15 or 20 %) are on the same page.

Good to know

  • X4 Pro only for now. An X3 port looks feasible but is not built or tested yet.
  • The phone side is standard Bluetooth: any app that advertises a 128-bit service UUID should work. These steps use nRF Connect on Android. On iPhone, an app like LightBlue should do the same.
  • OTA updates on this build come from this repository, so updating keeps BLE Find Mode.
  • Linking Bluetooth in costs about 187 KB of flash and about 24 KB of internal RAM, even with find mode off.
  • Listening costs an estimated 1 % of the battery a day at the default 2 minutes (unmeasured, from the wake times and typical ESP32-S3 currents), so a lost reader keeps listening for about two months. Find mode is off by default and stops on its own below the battery limit.
