v1.5.0-beta.2 is up

New beta is up: v1.5.0-beta.2. Download WhatCable.zip from the release, unzip, and drag it into /Applications over your existing copy. Your normal Pro licence keeps working.

The main thing to look at is the port card. Every line is now grouped under whatever told us it: what the cable's own chip reports, what your Mac measured, what WhatCable already knows about that cable, and what the charger says. The facts are the same as before, but now you can see which came from the cable claiming something and which came from your Mac measuring it.

What I'd like to know:

• Is any line sitting under the wrong heading?
• Does a card read worse than it used to, or feel more cluttered?
• With an unusual cable or dock, does the grouping still make sense?

Also changed:

• WhatCable takes less room in the menu bar, 42pt down to 36pt, and all the icons are now the same size so switching them doesn't shift anything.
• The popup no longer closes itself while you plug and unplug.
• The desktop widget shows its detail line again. It had been blank since v0.14.0.
• A port no longer says "Plugged in" when your Mac is on battery, since with no charger there's nothing to read the cable with.
• Traditional Chinese wording tightened throughout, thanks @jimmyorz.

Reply here with what you see, including "looks fine on my setup", which is genuinely useful. Anything that looks like a real bug I'll split out into its own issue.

@aldobalducci and @Mostxlnt, the Thunderbolt 5 gear is the most interesting case for the port-card grouping if you get a chance.

Looks good on my end, contibuted port data in case it's helpful. As a side not, it would be nice to be able to select beta downloads on the app itself so we don't have to go thru the entire process every time a new beta is released

Looks fine on my M4 Mac mini and M1 MacBook Air.

The new port card is working well on both machines. The grouping makes sense, and I haven’t noticed any lines under the wrong heading or anything that feels more cluttered than before.

By the way, the new port card also looks very polished and professional.

One small UI suggestion: in menu bar mode, the main WhatCable window uses a translucent background that picks up whatever is behind it. It looks really nice in general, but with some backgrounds—especially white or other very light colors—the result can become quite bright and a little uncomfortable to look at.

It would be great to have an option to disable the transparency effect and use the same solid background as Dock App mode instead.

@cannotcollide I see your using cable tracking. It's a bit of a sore point at the moment, how have you found it, and any recommendations/asks for improvement on that side?

I think it's great! Being able to save and label all the cables I have is one of my favourite features of WhatCable.

The performance tracking is cool too, it seems to have picked up a warning for one of my cables actually:

Only suggestion I could give is that the report for said cable is a little difficult to parse, are the lower dots times where it fell back to lower standards? Were these just times it was connected to a USB3/USB2 device? It's hard to say. Maybe a report of what fault its found would be cool.

To boost adoption, maybe switch it to an automatic system? Where it recognises a new cable is being used, saves it, and then monitors it automatically from thereon, without the user having to save and file each cable themselves. Users could disable the automatic feature too if they don't like it.

Regardless, it's a great system, and I'd love to see it grow further. Let me know if there's any way I can help support it!

on my Mac mini m1
built in A ports - usb hub is the KVM, the esight is a webcam plugged into the kvm, the unknown under that is the dell monitor, then the apple keyboard and mouse, the 2 unknown not sure they're both coming from the monitor, if I unplug the monitor the only things on the usb a port is the esight which would be the webcam in the kvm

the usb-c port has a satchi Hib that sits underneath and has a .m2 sata 2tb storage card in it, I'm guessing it has both usb 2 and usb 3 hub in it, I only have 1 usb3 stick plugged in, which is showing sandisk 3.2
