🎨 Type System Modernisation

Standardise type hints to modern Python 3.10+ syntax for improved clarity and flexibility:

Phase 1: Union → Pipe Notation (PR #5)

Replace verbose Union syntax with modern pipe notation:

# Before
from typing import Union

def foo(x: Union[int, float]) -> Union[str, None]:
    pass

# After
def foo(x: int | float) -> str | None:
    pass

Phase 2: Standardise to Sequence Types (PR #5)

Replace specific collection types with generic Sequence for better flexibility:

from collections.abc import Sequence

# Before
def generate_sin_index(
    datetime_list: list[datetime] | tuple[datetime, ...],
    freq: list[number] | tuple[number, ...],
) -> NDArray[np.float64]:
    pass

# After
def generate_sin_index(
    datetime_list: Sequence[datetime],
    freq: Sequence[number],
) -> NDArray[np.float64]:
    pass

Phase 3: Code-Level Modernisation (PR #6)

Further simplify type hints and remove legacy patterns:

Type Alias Update:

# Before (validators.py)
from typing import Union

number = Union[float, int]

# After
number = float | int

Import Statement Simplification:

# Before (time_series.py)
from typing import (
    Any,
    Literal,
    overload,
)

# After
from typing import Any, Literal, overload

Standard Type Annotations:

# Before (test_time_series.py)
from toolbox_python.collection_types import int_list

cls.interpolation_nodes: list[int_list] = [...]

# After
cls.interpolation_nodes: list[list[int]] = [...]

Files Modified:

  • src/synthetic_data_generators/time_series.py: 612 lines modified
  • src/synthetic_data_generators/utils/validators.py: 156 lines added
  • src/tests/test_time_series.py: 835 lines modified

Type Changes:

  • list[T] | tuple[T, ...] → Sequence[T]
  • Collection_of_Collection_of_datetime_or_int → Sequence[Sequence[datetime]] | Sequence[Sequence[int]]
  • Introduce number type alias: number = Union[float, int] → number = float | int (updated in PR #6)
  • Remove Union import in favour of | pipe operator throughout codebase
  • Replace custom collection types with built-in Python type annotations

🛡️ Validation Module Extraction

Extract validation methods into reusable utility module for better code organisation:

New Validators Module (src/synthetic_data_generators/utils/validators.py):

  • ._value_is_between(): Check if value falls within range
  • ._assert_value_is_between(): Assert version with custom error messages
  • ._all_values_are_between(): Check if all values in sequence fall within range
  • ._assert_all_values_are_between(): Assert version for collections
  • Define number type alias for reuse across modules

Benefits:

  • Eliminate code duplication across time series methods
  • Centralise validation logic for maintainability
  • Enable reuse in future modules
  • Improve error messaging consistency
  • Convert to static methods for better performance

🎲 Seed Handling Improvements

Enhance random seed management for deterministic behaviour and reproducibility:

Changes:

  • Store seed in self._seed instance variable
  • Expose seed as property for external access
  • Use stored seed consistently across all random number generators
  • Add seed parameters to seasonal index generation methods
  • Replace direct np.random.normal() calls with self.random_generator.normal()
  • Add ._set_seed() method for consistent seed initialisation

Implementation:

class TimeSeriesGenerator:
    def __init__(self, seed: int | None = None) -> None:
        self._seed = seed # Store for future use
        self._rng = np.random.default_rng(seed)

    @property
    def seed(self) -> int | None:
        return self._seed

🧪 Test Coverage Enhancement

Achieve 100% line coverage with comprehensive test improvements:

Coverage Improvements:

  • Before: 78.3% coverage (148/189 lines)
  • After: 100% coverage (219/219 lines)
  • Increase: +21.7 percentage points, +71 lines covered

New Test Cases:

  • test_create_time_series_with_AR(): Autoregressive parameter testing
  • test_create_time_series_with_MA(): Moving average parameter testing
  • test_create_time_series_with_exogenous(): Exogenous variable testing
  • test_generate_season_index_*(): Comprehensive seasonal pattern testing
  • Edge case validation for all parameter combinations

Cross-Platform Compatibility:

  • Add assert_timeseries_equal() helper function for floating-point tolerant comparisons
  • Replace exact equality assertions with approximate comparisons using np.testing.assert_allclose()
  • Set sensible tolerance defaults (rtol=1e-7, atol=1e-10)
  • Ensure tests pass consistently across Ubuntu, macOS, Windows and x86-64, ARM64 architectures

Test Suite Metrics:

  • 836 lines of test code (significant expansion)
  • Parameterised tests for systematic coverage
  • Clear test naming convention for discoverability
