What behaviour you see

Sometimes, the startup is very slow (5sec). Logs are in the gist.
Usually happens if more than 30min passed after using rofi.

What behaviour you expect to see

Consistently fast startup - Like the fast log attached.

It looks like it takes a very long time to walk through and parse the desktop files in the user directory.

This seems to take around 90% of the startup time.

Do you have a lot of files in your user directory? (often ~/.local/share/applications/)

I have about 2650 of "wine-extension-XXX".desktop files. Didn't notice that, will close if removing them helped.

SSD or Spinning disk.

/home is on disk, but / is on ssd.
Deleting those files decreced the startup time to 3 secs but it's still somewhat annoying.

it is 2 seconds till first drawn of gui is done.

Ill take a look if I can speed up history

But this might still be I/O.

Another big time is going over the bin directories for the run mode. (0.8 seconds).

It seems (home-dir) I/O is a big bottleneck.

Does the fact that it only happens after 45 minutes from the last use matter? After the slow 2-3 sec run I can run it within 0.1 secs as expected.

Linux will cache the files, after X time this might be moved out of memory again.

You can do this manually using the following command (as root):

echo 1 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches
