Object Location Tones 26.2.0 brings more flexible location reporting, improves continuous mouse monitoring, introduces new caret feedback option, adds a MIDI troubleshooting helper and includes new translations.
Translations and Settings
The add-on is now available to more users and has a clearer settings identity.
- Added Croatian, Italian, and Spanish translations.
- To better fit localization, the NVDA Settings panel and Input Gestures Dialog category is now called Positional tones.
- The add-on remains named Object Location Tones in the Add-on Store or Add-on Manager.
- The Positional tones category in settings is placed above NVDA's Advanced category.
Location Presentation Modes
You can choose how Object Location Tones determines and represents the current object's location.
- Choose whether positional tones follow NVDA's navigator object or the object with system focus.
- Choose whether the object is represented by its centre, the middle of its left edge, or the middle of its right edge.
- The default mode follows the navigator object and represents its centre which is, also, backward compatible behaviour.
- Left and right edge representation can be useful for exploring layout, comparing object alignment, and understanding wide interface elements.
Improved Mouse Monitoring
Continuous mouse monitoring now works more naturally alongside keyboard and object navigation.
- Added NVDA's navigator object as a mouse-monitoring reference point.
- You can now leave the mouse stationary and navigate with the keyboard safely to compare the pointer with a changing focused-object, navigator-object, or caret reference point.
- Keyboard navigation keeps monitoring active and prevents an additional overlapping navigation tone for navigator, focus and caret movements.
- Added an option to choose whether to announce when monitoring ends naturally after pointer inactivity.
- Improved handling of NVDA's mouse tracking capability while continuous monitoring is active. They do not clash any longer.
Caret Reporting at Tabs and Spaces
Added an option to limit caret location feedback to tabs and spaces.
- Helps monitor indentation and spacing without hearing a tone for every caret movement.
- Works while navigating existing text.
- Also works when
Report caret location while typingis enabled. - When you type and
Report caret location while typingis enabled, the new caret location will be announced after tab or space has been inserted, not the location of the character itself.
MIDI Output Reset
Added an optional command for recovering MIDI output without needing to go to settings each time a hardware or software MIDI synthesizer becomes unresponsive.
- Reset MIDI output is available in NVDA's Input Gestures dialog under Positional tones category.
- The command has no default gesture; assign one if you use positional tones via MIDI regularly and you experience MIDI synthesizer problems often.
