Veridical

Five effects for VCV Rack 2, by eddie_dodd.

I built these because the obvious things were missing. Search the Rack library for a flanger and you get three modules, none of which is a flanger. They are two vibratos and a waveguide that happen to carry the tag. No phaser in the library has been rebuilt since 2025. There are more than three thousand modules available and several of the effects every guitarist has owned since 1978 are either absent or abandoned.

So the design brief was narrow on purpose. Each module does what its label says and nothing else. No hidden modes, no menu-only parameters, no macro knob that secretly moves four things at once.

The modules

Module HP What it is
Flanger 10 Short modulated delay, bipolar feedback
Chorus 10 Longer delay, two to four voices
Phaser 10 Four, six or eight allpass stages with feedback
Ring Mod 10 Sine carrier, or bring your own
Env Follower 10 Attack and release follower with gate outputs

The follower is the one that looks out of place. It is there because the other four are far more interesting driven by audio than by an LFO, and without it you would need a module from somewhere else to do the most obvious thing in the set.

What they all share

These conventions are identical across all five, so Polyphony and CV covers them once instead of repeating them on every page.

  • Stereo throughout. The right input is normalled to the left, so a mono source feeds both sides without a mult.
  • Polyphonic to sixteen channels, following the channel count of the input.
  • A CV input and its own attenuverter on every continuous control.
  • Bypass passes audio through instead of muting, so you can compare against the dry signal without repatching. Env Follower is the exception and explains why on its own page.
  • A dark and a light panel per module instance, saved with the patch. See Panels.

Where this set is thin

Worth saying plainly rather than leaving you to find out.

There is no delay and no reverb, which are the two effects people reach for first. That was deliberate for a first release, because the library already has seventy-five delays and thirty reverbs and I had nothing to add to either. The gaps I could actually fill were the modulation effects.

The follower has no rectifier shape control and no lookahead. The ring modulator does not oversample, so at high carrier frequencies with bright material you will hear aliasing along with the intended sidebands.
