Four Irish Typefaces v3.100
3.100 (2026-10-27)
- Finishing passes on every face after independent type reviews. Outlines are settled on the unit
grid with smooth joins, nodes at extremes and no slivers; each correction and its reason is in
research/ (each face's judged-edits.json and README). - Kilfane: the letters on one set of lines and stems evened. The Bold and Bold Italic draw their
accents, rules, math signs, bullet, % ‰, small figures and the letters in @ © ® with the bold's
pen. Their curves (G S s v w x y ß W) are true curves, the joins of k r 6 9 and the g's tail stay
open, the dots of ! ? i j stand clear, and the cedilla and ogonek take the bold's weight. Capitals
keep 30 units from capitals and from lowercase (20 before lowercase in the bolds), and 40 before
an accented i. The bolds' j is spaced as i, and ? as ! in every style. A case feature sets dashes,
guillemets, colon, bullets, @ and ¡ ¿ for capitals (CSS: font-feature-settings: "case"). - Carrick: f on the baseline; the diaeresis is N513's paired dots; % ‰ # ¤ @ in the figures' weight,
and ™'s small m with its cuts open; ¢'s bar clear of the counter; the figures on one line; ḃ's
ponc beside its ascender, ḋ's and ḟ's well above theirs (b, d, f + U+0307 compose to them); £ and
$ on the baseline at their printed heights; ‹ › « » one drawing and its mirror image; f clear of a
following ascender; ' and " as deep as the curly quotes. The Italic keeps the Regular's cuts and
counters. - Tuam Uncial: the arch cuts, slits and seams at the widths N45 prints; stems evened; dots and
accents at N45's gaps; í's fada steeper, so í and i are told apart at text sizes; ḃ's and ḋ's ponc
beside the ascender, ḟ's above; a heavier comma, quotes and apostrophe, and ' " to match; § in
continuous curves; % ‰ from its own 0. The Italic has the Regular's weight and cuts. The word
space (and the no-break space) is half the n, 448 (Italic 435), not 320. - Céilí: the h on the baseline; stems evened; pen terminals as straight cuts; the dots of ! ? are
the period's pen diamond; l' L' ł' kern by one rule with the other quote pairs; ð and đ spaced as
d; € and ¥ on the figures' line; h's foot straight and j's bar as i's. The Bold and Bold Italic
keep the Regular's dot gaps and open joins (b d k p r 9); their heavy level strokes (7 3, dashes,- = #), math signs, bullet, % ‰ and the letters of @ © ® take the bold's weight.
- All four faces: the brackets, braces and bar stand with each face's parentheses; #'s bars are
centred on its sloped strokes; ≈ is drawn at the weight and spacing of =; the rings of @ and ¤ are
at least half the weight of the o, © and ® keep the figures' height with heavier rings, and ° is
heavier with its counter open, no taller than 0.3 of the figures. Combining marks stand clear of
their letters, stack on one another and follow a precomposed letter's accent; the dot above keeps
the ponc's place, so Irish ḃ ċ ḋ ḟ ġ ṁ ṗ ṡ ṫ are unchanged, and the comma below hangs clear of a
descender. - The line box changes in Kilfane (999/-214 to 1023/-204), Carrick (965/-235 to 988/-213) and Tuam
Uncial (936/-264 to 951/-258), for taller accents and the bolds' cedillas; Céilí's is unchanged.
The TrueType files keep no speck where a tiny curve's conversion crossed itself, and the fonts
build byte for byte the same on any machine. - Names are unchanged; coverage adds U+0323 (combining dot below); features add mkmk (and Kilfane's
case).

- The fonts are redrawn from the 1978 originals in the National Irish Visual Arts Library (NIVAL),
not the photocopied flyer: Kilfane from the N516 alphabet specimen and the averaged impressions of
its Letraset production sheet; Carrick from the N513 specimen and the averaged impressions of its
two production sheets, each letter set in the sheet's own frame by Letraset's spacing marks; Tuam
Uncial and Céilí from the mean of the flyer (N46) and the catalogue (N45), with Céilí's
disagreements decided by a third print (N44). Each study's evidence is in research/. - Tuam Uncial's braces are drawn with a point; Kilfane's and Carrick's stem feet sit on the baseline.
- Names, coverage and features are unchanged; spacing follows the new outlines.
