@demirfirat demirfirat released this 09 Oct 08:43

Changes

  • Settings panel on the iPad: labels shrink to fit instead of clipping,
    and the Wi-Fi/USB selector stays readable on iOS 7+. Looks the same on iOS 6.

iPadScreen 1.0.1

@demirfirat demirfirat released this 09 Oct 07:47

Fixes

  • iPad: screen no longer freezes after the mouse stops (the last frame was dropped when the send queue was full)
  • iPad app no longer crashes at launch when built with a recent Xcode (links with ld-classic)
  • Mac: a clear warning when no virtual display is found, with automatic retry once it appears
  • Build scripts work with newer Swift toolchains

New

  • Mouse cursor is drawn by the iPad as its own layer: smooth and no video cost
  • Still screens get a sharp frame after a short pause

Update both the Mac app and the iPad app; the cursor needs both.

First release. Turns an old jailbroken iPad (tested on an iPad 2, iOS 6.1.3) into an extended display for a Mac, over USB or Wi-Fi.

Downloads

File For
iPadScreen-1.0.0-macOS.zip Mac app, macOS 14+, Apple Silicon and Intel
iPadScreen-1.0.0-iOS.deb iPad app, jailbroken iPad on iOS 6+ (32-bit)
SHA256SUMS.txt Checksums

Setup takes a few minutes: see Quick start. You'll also need BetterDisplay (free) for the virtual display.

Highlights

  • ~35 fps at 1024×768 on an iPad 2 (libjpeg-turbo NEON decoding)
  • USB first, falls back to Wi-Fi automatically; finds the Mac over Bonjour
  • Pair once (over the cable, or with a 4-digit code); after that, mutual challenge-response authentication on every connection
  • No jailbreak? Open the Mac's address in Safari instead (slower, Wi-Fi only)

Notes

  • The Mac app isn't notarized. If macOS blocks it, open System Settings › Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.
  • The stream itself isn't encrypted; use it on networks you trust, or over USB.
  • Only tested on an iPad 2 and an M1 Mac mini. Reports from other devices are welcome.
