Release list
SwitchAirCast 1.1.2
What's new
- Smooth 60 fps videos. YouTube videos at 60 fps (sent with the AirPlay button) now run on a steady clock. On a Switch OLED, frames skipped dropped from 10–24% to 0–0.3% at both 720p and 1080p.
- Resolution is 1080p by default. If the picture stutters on a weak Wi-Fi, choose 1280 × 720 in Settings (−). The Automatic option from 1.1.0 (720p handheld, 1080p docked) is gone, and if you had it selected you now get 1080p. A size you set yourself in
config.iniis kept. - Simpler stats overlay (X button). It shows only the share of frames shown over the last few seconds, for example "Frames shown: 99.6%", with no growing frame count.
- Debug logs are complete. With
debug_log = true, the copies in/config/SwitchAirCast/logs/now start with the first lines of each run and no longer lose lines while YouTube sends its playlists.
Upgrading
Replace /switch/SwitchAirCast.nro with the new file. Your settings are kept.
Install
- Download
SwitchAirCast.nrobelow and copy it to/switch/on your SD card. (Or download the zip and extract it to the root of the SD card.) - Open the Homebrew Menu through a game (hold R while starting any game) and start SwitchAirCast.
- On your iPhone, iPad or Mac (same Wi-Fi network): Control Center → Screen Mirroring → choose your Switch.
See the README for all buttons, settings and troubleshooting.
Reporting a problem
Open an issue and attach log.txt and log-previous.txt from /config/SwitchAirCast/ on the SD card, plus the newest file in /atmosphere/crash_reports/ if the app crashed. With debug_log = true the log is much more detailed, and the last 10 runs are kept in /config/SwitchAirCast/logs/.
SwitchAirCast 1.1.1
Bug fix for 1.1.0.
Fixed
- YouTube videos didn't start and screen mirroring often failed to connect when
debug_log = truewas set inconfig.ini. Since 1.1.0, debug logging wrote every line to the SD card twice, and the AirPlay connection had to wait for it. YouTube's playlists took about 16 seconds to read, so the iPhone gave up. Logging now goes to memory and is written to the SD card in the background a few times a second, so it never slows down AirPlay. With debug logging on, YouTube on the Switch now gets its playlists in about 1.5 seconds and plays at 720p and 1080p.
With debug_log = false (the default) only a few lines are logged, so most users shouldn't have seen this. Everything else is the same as in 1.1.0.
See the README for all buttons, settings and troubleshooting, and the 1.1.0 release for what's new in 1.1.
SwitchAirCast 1.1.0
What's new
- Resolution and frame rate in the Settings menu (− button). Resolution is Automatic by default: 720p in handheld mode and 1080p on the TV. You can also fix it to 1080p or 720p, and set the frame rate to 60 or 30 fps. Changes apply the next time a device connects, with no restart. (#1)
- Smoother mirroring. Frames that arrive in a burst over Wi-Fi are now shown one after another instead of being dropped. On a Switch OLED, under 1% of frames were skipped at both 720p and 1080p.
- Clearer stats overlay (X button). It shows the share of frames that reached the screen over the last few seconds, instead of a growing count of skipped frames.
- A description for every setting under the Settings list. Texts were also shortened where they could be cut off, in English and both Spanish versions.
- Starting from the Album now shows how to open SwitchAirCast through a game. From the Album the Switch leaves too little memory to play video.
- Better logs for bug reports. The log gets frame statistics every 5 seconds while mirroring. With
debug_log = true, the last 10 runs are also kept in/config/SwitchAirCast/logs/. - The version and author are shown at the bottom of the screen.
Upgrading from 1.0.0
Replace /switch/SwitchAirCast.nro with the new file. Your settings are kept. If you had changed width/height in config.ini, that size stays selected. Otherwise resolution switches to Automatic.
Install
Known limitations
- Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+ and similar apps can't be played (they block mirroring and encrypt their AirPlay streams). YouTube works.
- Videos play up to 1080p H.264; 4K and H.265 are not supported.
- Movie files sent from QuickTime Player on a Mac don't play; mirror the Mac's screen instead.
- Anyone on your Wi-Fi can mirror to the Switch while the app is open.
Reporting a problem
Open an issue and attach log.txt and log-previous.txt from /config/SwitchAirCast/ on the SD card, plus the newest file in /atmosphere/crash_reports/ if the app crashed. Setting debug_log = true gives a much more detailed log.
SwitchAirCast 1.0.0
SwitchAirCast turns your Nintendo Switch into an AirPlay receiver: mirror your iPhone, iPad or Mac, send YouTube videos to it, or play music through it.
Features
- Screen mirroring from iPhone, iPad and Mac, up to 1080p at 60 fps, decoded by the Switch's hardware video decoder.
- Send videos instead of mirroring: the AirPlay button in the YouTube app (iPhone/iPad) or in Safari on a Mac. The Switch plays the video itself, and your device becomes the remote.
- Music over AirPlay, with title, artist, album, cover art and progress on screen.
- Vertical mode for portrait apps (button R, or automatic with the motion sensor).
- Screen off while music keeps playing (button Y, or automatically).
- Black theme for the OLED model, and an English / Spanish interface.
- A Settings menu on the − button.
Install
- Download
SwitchAirCast.nrobelow and copy it to/switch/on your SD card. (Or download the zip and extract it to the root of the SD card.) - Open the Homebrew Menu through a game (hold R while starting any game) and start SwitchAirCast. Starting from the Album works too, but there is much less memory there for video.
- On your iPhone, iPad or Mac (same Wi-Fi network): Control Center → Screen Mirroring → choose your Switch.
The first time a Mac sends a video, it asks for a code: type the 4 digits shown on the Switch.
See the README for all buttons, settings and troubleshooting.
Known limitations
- Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+ and similar apps can't be played (they block mirroring and encrypt their AirPlay streams). YouTube works.
- Videos play up to 1080p H.264; 4K and H.265 are not supported.
- Anyone on your Wi-Fi can mirror to the Switch while the app is open.
- Sending videos from a Mac is new and has had little testing so far. Please report problems.
Reporting a problem
Open an issue and attach log.txt and log-previous.txt from /config/SwitchAirCast/ on the SD card, plus the newest file in /atmosphere/crash_reports/ if the app crashed.
