what is this game

  • alienward is a cozy-chaotic sandbox simulator where you manage an alien maternity ward.
  • each patient arrives for a different purpose and you have to guide and help them
  • each child that is born has their own effect and you have to analyze and create an antidote to cure the effect!

why i made this game

  • mainly to learn skills that i have not learned yet from game jams (such as polishing, sound system, ai systems, etc.) as i am making this all by myself.

  • it's not the first time that i've made a game, but most of the games i make are from game jams (timed competitions for game development), meaning they don't have a lot of time to be polished, which is what I'm trying to achieve in making this game, to learn about making a polished, compact and content-filled project.

quick start

online

  • the game is available on itch.io!

running this game locally

  • first get the godot engine at https://godotengine.org/, specifically version 4.6.2 stable
  • the clone the repo using git clone https://github.com/derukaeru/alienward.git
  • then import the folder in the godot project manager
  • open it and run using F5 or click the play button

or

  • download the exe on the itch page

stuff about the development

  • first off, this project is definitely the biggest project i've ever made currently having 100~ hours recorded on hackatime not including art hours (not like my art is good anyways)

  • second off, i've nearly dropped this project multiple times mainly because of burnout, lack of motivation and life getting in the way, leading to me doing only an hour a day (just to keep the streak on macondo). but its great to see that its come this far and from all of the things ive learned from this project, it was definitely worth it.

  • now that were past that, what are the obstacles did i face making this game and what did i learn from this:

  • my favorite thing that i learned from this is definitely the persona-style ui and the animations, definitely the most proud thing i've made on this lol

  • i've definitely had problems with choosing how the game would go and game design in general

  • scope creep is also one of the biggest problems i've faced and removed about 50% of content (like an outside room and more baby effects)

  • also the art, my art is seriously so bad that i need to do it while this is in review (by macondo) just so i can focus on it

  • i know that it would be best to add more people into this project but, this is a personal project and i dont want to manage other people working on it

  • also playtest, im not the most social person so the only one playing this game, is me

  • probably more obstacles i've faced but forgot, maybe i'll add them at a later time

what to be added in the future

this might seem like a lot (i think it is too), but most of these are pretty simple to add. i just need some reviews/feedback if what im building is actually good :p

  • fix end day screen values
  • revamp the textures
  • add guide
  • add shaders
  • add save states
  • add intro scene
  • add sound effects
  • add ambient music

ui

  • revamp shop screen
  • revamp microscope screen
  • revamp antidote screen

models

  • table
  • chair
  • ward bed

for those confused with the gameplay

  • there are posters in the game that will teach you how to use the stuff
but this is the flow of the game for those still confused
  • start day

  • patient comes in

    1. check up
    1. labor

(1)

  • patient goes to clinic
  • scan the patient using the ultrasound scanner
  • click the tv to generate the print
  • give the ultrasound print from the tv next to the scanner
  • patient leaves

(2)

  • patient goes in
  • click on the patient to select an available ward
  • goes to ward = gives birth to baby
  • bring baby to nursery area
  • swab baby
  • use microscope on swab
  • get an antidote item using the scanned "effect index" from the microscope
  • insert the item in the antidote stand
  • generate an antidote by inputting the other values from the microscope
  • give the antidote to the baby
  • care for baby until patient gets better
  • give baby to the parent watching
  • patient leaves
  • clean up dirt and water on the ground

ps. yes this being fully lowercased is intentional lol
