Ask agent (preview)

  • Select text in a review and press ⌘L to ask a local agent about it.
  • Works with Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenCode or Pi over ACP right now.
  • Answers stream into a side panel, read-only by default, and are pinned to the passage in the margin.
  • Known limitations:
    • We don't fork the authoring agent's context yet, but we're going to experiment with it.
    • Opening an agent's code references just pops a Code OSS window right now. Not ideal UX!
    • Can't comment on diagrams yet.
    • Can't render diffr inline yet.

Please share feedback in our discussion thread!

Most of these fixes came from your issues, PRs, and feedback! Keep it coming!!

New

  • Whiteboards and documents can be shared without a Git repository; some semblance of plan sharing (#716)
  • Whiteboard notifies you when a review finishes authoring; off by default, enable with reviewReady (#745)
  • TeX math renders in Markdown with KaTeX, and one-line $$…$$ is display math; thanks for the contribution @patrickvossler18!(#617, #733)
  • Document width setting (#779, @KappaShilaff)
  • The Diff sidebar folds to a rail past its minimum width (#814, fixes #710 from @namxam)
  • Sublime Text is a keymap choice (#616, thanks @marclundgren for the contribution :) )
  • Editor and diagram state persist across reloads and relaunches; a commit diff, the trace view and scroll resume with their view; thanks to zustand (#727, #707)
  • OpenCode 2 is now a connect target (#807, fixes #783 from @MElkady)
  • Pi 0.99+ and oh-my-pi connect through the Whiteboard MCP server (#736)

Changed

  • Smaller install: DMG 322.0 → 274.2 MiB (-15%), installed app 734.3 → 657.7 MiB (-10%); now 25% smaller than VS Code 1.140.0; more size optimizations on the way! (tree-sitter grammars are huge) (#760, #787, #797, #799)
  • Internally moved to react-query+zustand to simplify ui state management. refactored a lot of our styles and moved to stylex to make contributing easier and the ui more consistent.
  • Bumped diffr to 0.1.8: CLI-only downloads, Linux ARM64, and Fortran, Verilog and F# parsers are opt-in so those files get text diffs (#711, #717, #818)
  • session_activity is split into begin, update and end tools, and the lens command is lens_edit; older agent setups need to update (#750, #743)
  • The PR stack selector moved to the topbar (#798)
  • Tabs in code blocks are four columns wide (#771)
  • macOS DMGs are named by architecture (#690)
  • Legacy review commands are dropped from Linux packages (#839)
  • Previews publish only after every platform builds and validates (#840)
  • Remaining user-facing Review copy now says Whiteboard (#753)

  • Scrolling and code peeks no longer restyle the whole document, the active diff entry's editors, or the canvas while resizing (#780, #782, #793, big shoutout to @KappaShilaff for all the layout performance fixes, appreciate you king)
  • Language working copies are released when diff models are off screen (#597)
  • Large source alignments no longer overflow the stack (#595)
  • Binary files stay folded in the Diff view (#598)
  • Read-only macOS installs are explained and automatic update retries pause (#599)
  • Same-size working edits and missing-base retries are no longer missed (#674)

  • Hidden scrollbars no longer make the workbench scrollable (#740)
  • Inline multi-diff entries scroll the visible editor horizontally (#791, @KappaShilaff)
  • The tour pane and side peek grow to half their container (#792, @KappaShilaff)

  • The bundled CLI reports the right release version (#684)
