Press navigation button for navigation and follow location

Current handling of navigation and follow location has the disadvantage that some actions are "hidden" behind long press.

We could simplify it so that users can easily discover the available actions
and at the same time increase security against accidental clicks:

• Tap navigation button to handle the navigation and follow location modes
• Show selection menu for available actions depending on the active status
• Simulation can remain behind long press, as it is not used by most users

A dedicated menu popup seems fine, is there a preference for this list format rather than the larger "tile" buttons?

The tile buttons will be replaced in the future with similar menus.

Tiles are difficult to maintain and work properly (i.e. be compatible) with the many screen sizes / dpi of Android.

This will also allow us to include more actions without being limited by fixed number of tiles
and avoid the multiple menu steps in many screens that makes the app complicated.

Current navigation behaviour is faster: less actions but needs more knowledge. For my needs is better do not change it, but with a wide point of view is better use a menu to show users the different options to start navigation or follow location. The goal of any commertial app should be have more users keeping the directives for what is known.

Maybe when nav or follow mode is running, if user tap again should stop without any menu... What happens with pause and actual long press?

I taught a cruiser course to a group of bikers. Even I create a slideshow with more than 70 pages, one person doesn't know how to start navigation... What is obvious to many people is often not so obvious to others. Cruiser have a lot of options that are not for basic user, but I think that main options can be more accessible as you purpose.

Follow location or stop navigation are indeed currently "hidden".

Also all other actions via long press are a bit "hidden".

I can't answer this for "most users". 😉

I personally use it on a regular basis, as already mentioned in an other thread, to "pre-check" possibly tricky areas in a - to me - unknown region (which means this basically happens to me in every motorcycle holiday).

Or when riding with a group of bikers in an unknown area, to be able to instruct them before the journey about potential trip hazards.

But again: why "hide" it, regadless how often it is used, when your aim is to make the UI more straightforward?

Or vice versa, which is why there is the option of extended settings (or menu) for advanced users.

The reason I asked the question was to get the explanation that @devemux86 gave me in off-list correspondence regarding this very matter - as I thought the "List vs Tile" issue may be important.

My only concern is that the buttons may be harder to use, perhaps requiring a larger gap/border between them?

I am not admitting to getting my gloves on, all ready to ride, then realizing that I have not set the phone up 🤡

Would it be possible to add a button to quickly add a favorite ? Without popup asking for a name or something. The idea behind this is the following ;
As an openstreetmap contributor I like to add useful information when back to home like adding oneway information, adding a speed camera, changing highway type ...
Maybe an extra button above "+" hidded by default and that could be activated in settings. Maybe save this quick favorite in a dedicated group like "Quick favorites" something like that.

We could also do something like that, e.g. simply "Points of interest".
The date name is just one of the many possible ideas.

I remember that this function to instantly add favorites on the go was somewhere named "WOW button".

I personally really liked that, so with the current implementation my first favorites group where all these instant POI are added is called "WOW spots".

Maybe this naming is worth thinking about?

It's not translated and does not mean much to most users.

We could also use "Auto favorites" or simply "Automatic".

will this menu also open when you press and hold the WunderLINQ to the right and then make a selection by rolling the rotary wheel up and down and then confirm with a long press?

wird sich dieses Menü dann auch öffnen beim Langdruck nach rechts mit dem WunderLINQ und dann mit Hoch und Runter Rollen des Drehrades Auswahl treffen und dann mit Langdruck bestätigen?

External devices cannot make any selections in the app interface.
They can only switch various functions on and off as we have designed them.

Okay, very cool. Thanks for the info, I'm pleased and am always confirmed in my decision to use cruisers for my long tours. Planning via curvy and navigation in the cruiser, the best thing you can do.

So, I have just tested it. The long press to the right does not start this menu. A long press to the right only starts and ends the next mode. Once you are in the menu, however, you can select and confirm, which is really ingenious.

So, ich habe es gerade getestet. Der Langdruck nach rechts, startet nicht dieses Menü. Beim Langdruck nach rechts wird nur der Folgemodus gestartet und beendet. Wenn man im Menü drin ist, kann man aber auswählen und bestätigen, dass ist schonmal echt genial.

The navigation button now starts / pauses / stops navigation and follow location modes with a simple press.
Long press the navigation button simply provides an additional navigation simulation that most users don't need.
Pressing the location button simply centers the map on the location. Or do you mean something else?

Die Navigationstaste startet/pausiert/stoppt jetzt die Navigation und folgt den Standortmodi mit einem einfachen Druck.
Langes Drücken der Navigationstaste bietet lediglich eine zusätzliche Navigationssimulation, die die meisten Benutzer nicht benötigen.
Durch Drücken der Standort Taste wird die Karte einfach auf den Standort zentriert. Oder meinst du etwas anderes?

If I currently press and hold the right button on my WunderLINQ, the next mode starts. If I press short, nothing happens at the moment. I now thought that the long press, starting the next mode, would be changed to the function where this menu opens, which I have inserted above. You could of course say, just like on the phone, that the short press opens this menu.

wenn ich aktuell bei meinem WunderLINQ den langen Druck nach rechts mache, startet der Folgemodus. Wenn ich kurz drücke, passiert ja aktuell gar nichts. Ich dachte jetzt, dass der Langdruck, starten des Folgemodus, geändert wird, in die Funktion, wo dieses Menü sich öffnet, was ich oben eingesetzt habe. Man könnte natürlich, genau wie am Telefon, sagen, dass der Kurzdruck dieses Menü öffnet.

WunderLINQ buttons only call app functions (they do not use app buttons).
WunderLINQ functions currently are:

I know what works in WunderLINQ and what doesn't. I would just be happy about more :-)
