WizRec v0.1.3

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 21 Oct 14:26

A polish release of WizRec, the free, open-source screen recorder and
video editor for the Mac by Devs Wizard. It opens your Camtasia projects.

Download

Download WizRec-0.1.3.dmg below. Nothing else to install: FFmpeg and everything
WizRec needs are inside the app.

You need: a Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later) and macOS 14 Sonoma or later.

  1. Open the DMG and drag WizRec into Applications. If you have an older WizRec,
quit it first and choose Replace: your projects and settings stay as they are.
  2. First launch only: in Applications, right-click (or Control-click) WizRec and
choose Open, then click Open in the dialog. macOS asks this once because
WizRec is not notarized by Apple.
  3. If macOS only offers Move to Trash or Done: open System Settings ▸ Privacy &
    Security
, scroll down to the message about WizRec and click Open Anyway, then
confirm with your password or Touch ID.

To record, allow WizRec under System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security for
Screen & System Audio Recording, Camera and Microphone when macOS asks.

SHA256SUMS.txt lists the checksum of the DMG. To check your download:
shasum -a 256 -c SHA256SUMS.txt in the folder that holds both files.

What's new

Getting started

  • An empty project explains itself. The canvas offers Record Screen and
Import Media…, the media bin and the timeline say what goes there, and the
properties panel tells you to select a clip. Play and step buttons stay off until
    there is something to play.
  • Drop files anywhere. Drag videos, images or audio from Finder onto the start
screen, the canvas, the timeline or the media bin. The canvas shows where the drop
goes; several files are placed one after another. A dropped project opens in its
own window, and files WizRec can't use get a plain explanation instead of nothing.

Editor

  • Timeline toolbar. Undo, Redo, Cut, Copy, Paste, Split, Delete, Ripple Delete,
Add Track, Snapping and zoom now sit right above the timeline. Each tooltip shows
its keyboard shortcut, and buttons are greyed out when they can't act.
  • Smarter placement. Media dropped on the canvas, double-clicked in the media bin
or imported goes in at the playhead, on the lowest track with room for the whole
clip, or on a new track on top. Dropping on a busy spot in the timeline inserts at
a clip's start (and moves the later clips right) when you drop near it, otherwise
uses a free track above. While you drag, the timeline shows where the clip will land.
  • Clip speed by duration. In the properties panel, type a new Duration for a
clip and WizRec sets the speed to match; Speed shows the actual value to two
    decimals.

Keyboard and accessibility

  • Tab moves between panes: media/library → canvas → properties → timeline and
back (Shift-Tab the other way), and walks the properties fields top to bottom.
Media bin tiles can be focused, and Space or Return adds the focused one at the
    playhead.

Fixes

  • The timeline no longer paints over the area above it after a resize.
  • Empty-state text can no longer make the window taller than the screen.
  • Importing a file that probes but isn't media no longer adds it.
  • Fixed a rare crash when video frames were released while the decoder that made
    them was shutting down.

See the 0.1.2 release for the
previous changes (start screen with recent projects, editor toolbar, opening projects when
Camtasia is installed, opening a video directly).

Known limits

  • Not notarized. WizRec is signed ad hoc, not with an Apple Developer ID, so macOS
asks before the first launch (see above).
  • No automatic updates yet. The built-in updater is still switched off; it turns on
in a later release. Watch Releases
    for new versions.
  • Backgrounds in Camtasia. Camtasia does not show WizRec's own animated backgrounds
when it opens a project saved by WizRec (it accepts only its own). WizRec warns when
you save such a project. Everything else in the project opens in Camtasia.
  • Look may differ slightly from Camtasia. Effects, transitions, callouts, cursor
effects and easing are built from the project files and observation, but have not yet
been compared frame by frame with Camtasia's own exports. Expect small differences in
how some effects look or move.
  • Apple silicon only. There is no Intel build.
  • Camtasia-only features (quizzes, hotspots, Smart Player, TechSmith cloud sharing) are
kept in your project files but not supported.

Source code and licences

WizRec is free software under the
GNU General Public License v3.0 or later.
Its source code for this release is the v0.1.3 tag of
devswizard/wizrec.
The bundled libraries (FFmpeg and its codecs, Sparkle) are listed with their licences in
THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md
and, with exact versions, in WizRec.app/Contents/Resources/Licenses/MANIFEST.txt; their
source code is available from each project at those versions and from the Homebrew
formulae that built them.

WizRec is an independent project, not affiliated with or endorsed by TechSmith. Camtasia
is a trademark of TechSmith Corporation, used only to describe file compatibility.

@github-actions github-actions released this 21 Oct 11:29

A bug-fix and polish release of WizRec, the free, open-source screen recorder and
video editor for the Mac by Devs Wizard. It opens your Camtasia projects.

What's new

Getting started

  • A start screen. WizRec now opens on a start screen with your recent projects (with
thumbnails) and buttons for New Project, New Recording, Open Project… and
Import Media…. You can also drop a project or a video onto it. It comes back when you
close the last project (Window ▸ Start Screen, ⇧⌘1), and you can turn it off at launch.
  • Opening projects works when Camtasia is installed. The Open dialog used to grey out
.cmproj and .tscproj files on Macs that also have Camtasia. They can now be chosen.
  • Open a video directly. Opening a video, audio or image file starts a new project with
that file already on the timeline.

Editor

  • A toolbar with Import, Record, Undo, Redo and a clear Export button
(also File ▸ Export…, ⌘E). Right-click the toolbar to customise it (zoom buttons are
    available there).

See the 0.1.1 release for the
previous changes (faster audio export, Camtasia-style Clip Speed and group drops, crash
fixes).

WizRec v0.1.1

@github-actions github-actions released this 21 Oct 10:05

video editor for the Mac by Devs Wizard. It opens your Camtasia projects.

Download

Download WizRec-0.1.1.dmg below. Nothing else to install: FFmpeg and everything

You need: a Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later) and macOS 14 Sonoma or later.

  1. Open the DMG and drag WizRec into Applications. If you have WizRec 0.1.0,
quit it first and choose Replace: your projects and settings stay as they are.
  2. First launch only: in Applications, right-click (or Control-click) WizRec and
choose Open, then click Open in the dialog. macOS asks this once because

What's new

Fixes

  • Export and recording no longer hang. When macOS's video encoder stops responding,
an export now stops with the message "The encoder stopped responding" in the export
queue, and a recording ends with an error, instead of waiting forever. The unfinished
    file is removed.
  • The window stays responsive while the preview renders a snapshot: WizRec no
longer waits for the graphics card on the main thread.
  • Captions typed in Camtasia (saved as rich text) now show their text in WizRec
    instead of raw formatting codes.
  • A rare crash while rendering is fixed. Closing a project or exporting while the
preview was still drawing frames could crash WizRec.
  • Faster audio export, especially for projects that don't store an audio sample
rate (up to about ten times faster), with exactly the same sound.
  • Caption errors are shown in full: when speech recognition fails right away, the
error message now always includes the reason.

Editing, closer to Camtasia

  • Copy and paste with groups works the way Camtasia does it: clips copied out of a
group keep their place and size on the canvas, and clips pasted into a group stay
inside the group's time range (on a free track inside it) instead of making the group
longer. Copying from or pasting into a Rev media group is not allowed, as in Camtasia.
  • Clip Speed rounds the way Camtasia does: when a speed doesn't give a whole number
of frames, the clip keeps all of its media and the speed is adjusted very slightly.
The new duration can also be set directly.
  • Dropping media into an open group works like Camtasia: the group keeps its length,
and the clip lands where you drop it (on a new track above when you drop it over the
tracks). A Library item double-clicked while a group is open goes in at the playhead.
  • Animated shader backgrounds: keyframes you set on a background's settings are now
saved the way Camtasia saves them, so the animation survives a later move or resize
    of the clip.

Accessibility

  • The tiles on every Library tab can be reached with the keyboard: Tab and
Shift-Tab move between tiles, Space or Return acts like a click on the
focused tile, and VoiceOver reads each tile's name. Space on a
focused tile no longer starts playback. Tab also reaches tiles that are scrolled out
    of view.

Download and app bundle

  • The app no longer carries file paths from the machine that built it, and every
release is checked for that before it goes public.
  • Groundwork for automatic updates (see Known limits).

Known limits

  • Not notarized. WizRec is signed ad hoc, not with an Apple Developer ID, so macOS
asks before the first launch (see above).
  • No automatic updates yet. The built-in updater is still switched off; it turns on
in a later release. Watch Releases
    for new versions.

when it opens a project saved by WizRec (it accepts only its own). WizRec warns when
you save such a project. Everything else in the project opens in Camtasia.

@github-actions github-actions released this 20 Oct 23:03

The first release of WizRec, a free, open-source screen recorder and video editor for
the Mac by Devs Wizard. It opens your Camtasia projects.

Download

Download WizRec-0.1.0.dmg below. Nothing else to install: FFmpeg and everything
WizRec needs are inside the app.

You need: a Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later) and macOS 14 Sonoma or later.

  1. Open the DMG and drag WizRec into Applications.

SHA256SUMS.txt lists the checksum of the DMG. To check your download:
shasum -a 256 -c SHA256SUMS.txt in the folder that holds both files.

What's new

Everything: this is the first public build.

Camtasia projects

  • Open, edit and save Camtasia .cmproj and .tscproj projects (format 2.0 to 10.0,
made on a Mac or a PC). Anything WizRec doesn't understand is kept exactly as it was,
and Camtasia opens the projects WizRec saves.
  • Missing media can be relinked, so a project moved from another computer opens cleanly.
  • Every save keeps a backup of the previous version inside the project.

Recording

  • Record the full screen, a region or a window, with camera, microphone and system
audio. Countdown, pause and resume, and a recording timer with hotkeys.
  • The mouse cursor and clicks are recorded separately from the picture, so cursor
effects can be changed after recording. Keystroke capture is opt-in.
  • Recordings go straight into the open project.

Editing

  • Multi-track timeline with zoom, snapping, magnetic tracks, and track mute, hide
    and lock.
  • Split, trim, ripple delete and ripple move, copy and paste, group and ungroup (including
editing inside a group), stitch and unstitch, detach audio, clip speed, Extend Frame
and markers. Everything can be undone.
  • Media bin with drag-and-drop import; thumbnails and waveforms on the timeline.

Look

  • Transform, crop, opacity and keyframe animation in a Metal preview that keeps up with
4K, including HDR footage (HDR10 and HLG are shown correctly on SDR screens).
  • Effects: rounded corners, drop shadow, border, reflection, mask, colour adjustment,
all 31 blend modes, media matte and motion blur.
  • 18 transitions (fades, wipes, slides, iris, cube, flip and more) and 9 animated
backgrounds, all original to WizRec. Shader backgrounds in your own Camtasia projects
    play too.
  • Callouts and annotations: shapes, speech bubbles, arrows, lines, text, highlighter,
blur, pixelate, spotlight, sketch draw-on and keystroke callouts.
  • Cursor effects from recordings: highlight, magnify, spotlight, click ripples and
    more.

Audio

  • Track mixing with volume points, fades, mute and solo.
  • Loudness normalisation, noise removal, volume levelling, emphasis and pitch, with the
same effect names and defaults as Camtasia's audio panel.

Captions

  • Transcribe speech to captions on your Mac: Apple's speech recognition out of the box,
or whisper.cpp for offline, multilingual transcription (Bengali included). See
    Captions.
  • Caption editor, dynamic (animated) caption styles, and SRT/VTT import and export.

Export

  • MP4 (H.264 or HEVC), MOV (ProRes), animated GIF, and audio only (M4A, MP3, WAV).
  • Resolution and frame-rate presets, batch export, progress and cancel. Exports are
fast: a 26-second demo project exports to ProRes in about 3 seconds on Apple silicon.

Known limits

  • Not notarized. WizRec is signed ad hoc, not with an Apple Developer ID, so macOS
asks before the first launch (see above).
  • No automatic updates yet. The built-in updater is switched off in this release.
    Watch Releases for new versions.
