Emulator Cemu
Systems: Nintendo Wii U (wiiu) · Runs as: homebrew NRO (full-memory mode only) · Get it: github.com/NaGaa95/Cemu-nx (releases) · Keys: required
Best effort: this guide is community-maintained and may lag behind new releases. The project itself (linked above) is the authoritative source — if anything here doesn't match what you see, trust their instructions.
Cemu-nx is an unofficial Switch port of Cemu, the Wii U emulator. It is what makes sd:/roms/wiiu a real folder rather than an aspiration — but it's also the newest and least proven thing on this wiki, at version 1.0.0 as of July 2026. Expect a moving target.
Set expectations. Cemu on a PC is mature and runs most of the Wii U library well; that maturity does not transfer to a Switch running the same emulator on far less headroom. Compatibility and speed vary hugely by title, first-time shader compilation stutters badly, and a game that runs fine on desktop Cemu may not boot here at all. Cemu's own compatibility list describes the PC build — treat it as an upper bound, not a promise.
- Download the latest
Cemu.nrofrom the releases page and copy it tosd:/switch/Cemu/— its own subfolder, not loose insd:/switch/like the other ports on this wiki. - Put your Wii U encryption keys at
sd:/switch/Cemu/keys.txt. Cemu can't decrypt retail titles without them, and they come from your own console — see the note below. - Launch it from the Homebrew Menu.
It will not run from the album. Cemu needs full application / title-override mode. Launch by holding R while opening an installed game from the Switch home menu so hbmenu takes over the full memory allocation. Starting it in album mode will fail or crash — that's the launch mode, not a bad download.
About keys. keys.txt is Wii U title-key material, dumped from your own console. Like BIOS files it's console data, not a game, and it isn't distributed with the emulator or with HaulNX — the BIOS Files page covers the general principle. Cemu's own setup documentation is the authority on the format.
- Download Wii U titles with HaulNX — they land in
sd:/roms/wiiu/. - In Cemu-nx, add
/roms/wiiuas a game library folder. SD, USB mass storage, and SMB shares are all supported, so a network share can sit alongside your SD library. - Cover art is fetched automatically from SteamGridDB if you let it.
Keep the titles in sd:/roms/wiiu rather than moving them under sd:/switch/Cemu/ — one shared library, same as every other emulator here.
Cemu-nx reads WUA, WUD, WUX, WUHB, RPX, ELF, and ISO, plus extracted (Loadiine-style) game folders. In practice:
-
.wuais the format to prefer. It's a single compressed archive per title and it can hold the base game, its update, and DLC together — which matters, because Wii U games are frequently unplayable-as-shipped without their update. -
.wud/.wuxare full disc images;.wuxis the compressed one. -
Extracted games are folders, not files. If a title arrives as a folder tree containing
code/,content/, andmeta/, leave it as a folder — don't try to repack it. - Wii U titles are large, frequently 10–20 GB each. This is the heaviest system HaulNX can download for; check your free space before queueing several.
- L + R + Plus opens the quick menu during gameplay.
- The first run of any game is the worst one. Shader compilation happens as you play and causes long pauses; it's cached, so the second session is meaningfully smoother. Don't judge a game on its first ten minutes.
- Graphics packs are supported per-game, as on desktop Cemu — resolution and performance packs are the useful ones here, and lowering resolution is the first thing to try on a struggling title.
- Controllers: remapping, multiplayer, gyro, and rumble all work, and Amiibo can be scanned with a Joy-Con. The Wii U GamePad's second screen has nowhere to go on a Switch, so games leaning on it will feel compromised regardless of performance.
- Updates and DLC are managed inside the app rather than by dropping files in the ROM folder.
- An overclock helps here as much as anywhere — docked, and expect heat.
Wii U games run properly under Cemu on a PC, where the project has years of optimization behind it. If you own a game and want to finish it, that's still the answer. Cemu-nx is worth trying for the novelty and for the lighter titles — just don't rebuild your library around it yet.
