Charon 0.1.0 — first crossing
The ferryman for your files. Charon keeps folders and drives in sync: mirror, backup or two-way, by hand, on change, on a schedule or the moment a drive is plugged in. Nothing is lost on the crossing.
Three ways to cross
- Mirror: the destination becomes an exact copy of the source.
- Backup: new and changed files are copied, and nothing is ever deleted on the destination.
- Two-way: changes flow both ways. Charon remembers the last synced state, so it can tell "deleted here" from "new there".
Four ways to start
Manually, a few seconds after changes settle, every N minutes or daily at a set time, or as soon as the drive is connected.
Built to be trusted
- Preview before you sync: a dry run shows exactly what will be copied, replaced and removed. New jobs open it by themselves.
- Safe deletes: removed and overwritten files go to a
.charon-trashfolder for 30 days (configurable). - No half-written files: every file is copied under a temporary name and only takes its real name once it's complete.
- Stops before disaster: if one side is suddenly empty (an unmounted drive, a wrong folder), Charon refuses to wipe the other.
- Conflicts are never silent: keep both, newest wins, or ask you. An edit always beats a deletion.
- Exclude filters, with sensible defaults (
.DS_Store,Thumbs.db, …).
And also
Menu bar / system tray icon with Sync all and Pause everything, notifications for errors, conflicts and big syncs, launch at login, a per-job activity log, and status colours with icons that stay readable for colour-blind eyes. No accounts, no cloud, no tracking.

First start: the macOS app is signed and notarised by Apple. The Windows installers aren't signed yet, so if SmartScreen asks, choose More info → Run anyway. On Linux, the tray icon needs AppIndicator support (on GNOME: the "AppIndicator" extension).
