TonalTap 0.2.0

TonalTap is a private, on-device macOS menu bar utility that estimates BPM, musical key, and Camelot notation from system audio.

Highlights

  • Native Core Audio process-tap capture; no microphone or virtual audio driver.
  • Bundled offline S-KEY Core ML detector.
  • Closed-loop 78-case accuracy gate: 97.4% exact and 0.983 MIREX in the release suite.
  • Automatic listening at launch with a compact Pause/Resume panel.
  • No recording files, analytics, accounts, or app-runtime network traffic.

Distribution mode: source release

This release intentionally contains source archives only. It does not attach a downloadable app binary because Developer ID signing, hardened runtime, Apple notarization, and clean-machine Gatekeeper verification are not configured.

Build on macOS 14.2 or newer with Swift 6:

git clone https://github.com/diptobiswas/TonalTap.git
cd TonalTap
./scripts/verify.sh
./scripts/install.sh

The local installer builds and signs the app for private use on that Mac. macOS requests System Audio Recording permission on first launch.

Known limits

  • Detection assumes Western major or minor tonality and uses a 15-second analysis window.
  • Modulation, ambiguous modes, very short loops, and multiple simultaneous audio sources can reduce accuracy.
  • The public release does not include a notarized direct-download app.
