Mikey v0.1.0: first preview

The first public build of Mikey: your Android phone as a microphone and webcam for your Windows PC, over USB, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. No accounts, no cloud.

This is an early preview. It is built and tested in CI, but not yet on many real phones and PCs. Please tell us what you find in Issues or Discussions.

Get started

1. PC: install VB-CABLE (free) and restart if it asks, then run Mikey-v0.1.0-windows-x64.exe. Mikey starts in the system tray.
2. Phone: install the APK. Android asks to allow installs from your browser or files app the first time.
3. Connect: plug in with USB debugging on, or put the phone and PC on the same Wi-Fi. Open Mikey on the phone and tap the mic or the camera. The first time, click Allow on the PC.
4. Use it: in Meet, Zoom or Teams, choose CABLE Output (VB-Audio Virtual Cable) as the microphone and Mikey Cam as the camera.

USB debugging also needs Android platform-tools (adb) on the PC's PATH. Stuck? See Troubleshooting.

Highlights

Phone app

• Mic and camera as two big buttons, with a live level ring around the mic
• Four connection levels chosen automatically (USB debugging, USB tethering, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth for audio only), switching mid-call without a gap
• Raw 48 kHz mic through AAudio for low delay: lossless over USB, Opus over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
• Finds your PC on Wi-Fi by itself, remembers it, and keeps settings in sync with it
• A notification with mic and camera buttons

PC app

• A tray app with a quick panel: mic level, mute, camera preview and a noise suppression slider
• A virtual mic through VB-CABLE, and a built-in virtual camera, Mikey Cam
• Asks you before a new phone can connect
• Clear voice: noise suppression (RNNoise), steady low-delay playback, and no metallic sound or flutter

Known limitations

• Windows only for now. The PC app builds on Linux, but has no virtual mic, camera, tray or Bluetooth there yet.
• The PC app isn't code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may warn you. Click More info, then Run anyway.
• The panel's Setup Mic button doesn't work in the downloaded app yet, so the mic shows up as CABLE Output rather than Mikey Mic. It works fine under that name.
• If Mikey Cam doesn't show up in your browser, restart the browser once.
• The camera isn't available over Bluetooth.
