v11.0.0
[11.0.0] - 2026-06-13
MAJOR release. The default install is now dramatically smaller and faster: torch and transformers are optional extras, ONNX is the primary embedding backend. The tool surface is cleaner too — 28 well-named tools, no legacy aliases cluttering clients that support tool discovery.
BREAKING CHANGE: the 34 legacy tool-name aliases that were deprecated in v10.x are removed. Clients still using old names (e.g. retrieve_memory, store_memory, delete_by_tag, search_by_tag, rate_memory, and the consolidation/graph/ingest aliases) must update to the current names before upgrading. See docs/MIGRATION.md for the complete mapping.
Added
- feat(deps): torch and transformers are now optional extras (install extras: [ml] or [full]). The default install uses ONNX Runtime for embeddings, which requires no GPU, has a much smaller footprint, and starts faster. Existing deployments that rely on sentence-transformers can add [ml] to their install command and nothing else changes (PR #49, @filhocf).
Changed
- feat(v11)!: remove the full deprecation layer — DEPRECATED_TOOLS dict, transform_deprecated_call(), is_deprecated(), get_new_tool_name(), get_deprecated_tool_defs(), get_deprecation_message(), MCP_SHOW_LEGACY_TOOLS env var, and ToolDef.deprecated field are all gone. The 34 legacy aliases they backed (retrieve_memory, store_memory, delete_by_tag, search_by_tag, rate_memory, and all consolidation/graph/ingest shims) no longer exist as callable MCP tools. The module mcp_memory_service.compat is retained for _sanitize_log_value() which is still used by the log-injection guard throughout the codebase (PR #72, supersedes #60).
- docs: README, architecture guide, quality guide, and wiki examples migrated to the current 28-tool registry names. No prose references to legacy aliases remain (PR #71).
Migration
Clients must rename calls before upgrading to v11. Full mapping: docs/MIGRATION.md. The canonical tool surface is the 28 tools in src/mcp_memory_service/tools/registry.py. Quick reference for the most common renames:
- retrieve_memory -> memory_search
- store_memory -> memory_store
- delete_by_tag -> memory_delete
- search_by_tag -> memory_list
- rate_memory -> memory_quality
