Retro Rewind 6.13, a 30 FPS mode, and DriftDroid can update itself
Retro Rewind 6.13
- Works with Retro Rewind 6.13.0 and 6.13.1, including Retro WFC online.
- Already have Retro Rewind installed? Tap Retro Rewind after updating DriftDroid. It notices the old version and updates itself (about 640 MB), then tap again to play.
- Fresh install downloads 6.13.0 and applies the 6.13.1 update on top, the same way the official installer does.
- DriftDroid now follows Retro Rewind's release list instead of knowing only one version. Updates that only change tracks or characters install without a new DriftDroid. Updates that change game code still need a new DriftDroid build.
- Large Retro Rewind updates download with a progress count and continue where they stopped if the connection drops.
- A failed install or update check no longer deletes a working Retro Rewind install.
- Fixed: picking an already-extracted Retro Rewind folder closed the app.
- The free-space check was asking for about 7 GB for a 4 GB job; it now asks for what it needs.
Warning
Mods that replace Retro Rewind's own menu files were made for 6.12.8 and can crash on 6.13 (for example when opening Retro WFC). Turn them off or get a version rebuilt for 6.13.
30 FPS races (new)
A new setting, 30 FPS races, for phones that can't hold 60. The game runs at normal speed and draws half as many frames, using the game's own 30 FPS mode, so it stops feeling like slow motion. It works in the original game and in Retro Rewind, offline and online. Menus stay at 60. Retro Rewind time trials and ghost races stay at 60 because Retro Rewind requires it. Off by default; applies from the next race.
DriftDroid updates itself (new, untested)
When a new version is out, an Update available button appears on the game chooser. Tap it, then Update Now: DriftDroid downloads the update, checks it, and Android asks you to confirm. The first time, Android asks you to allow DriftDroid to install apps. Saves and game data stay.
This starts with the next update; to get 1.3.0 itself, install this APK over your current one. It can't be tested for real until that next update exists, so if the button doesn't work then, download the APK from here like before and tell us.
Graphics on more phones
- Stretched characters and icons on new Snapdragon phones (Adreno 8xx) (#6): fixed automatically, and confirmed by a tester using a Turnip driver.
- GPU driver picker: Graphics... > GPU driver... installs a different graphics driver (for example Turnip) from a zip. See
docs/android-gpu-compatibility.md. - Missing and silver characters on the Galaxy S24 family (Adreno 750): a fix is on by default. Not confirmed on those phones by us yet.
- A fix for a launch crash on some Adreno 740 phones. Not confirmed on those phones by us yet.
- More phones that only partly support Vulkan now use it instead of dropping to OpenGL.
- A notice appears when the graphics mode you chose couldn't start and another was used.
- Resolutions below 1x are removed; they crashed going into a race.
Speed and heat (not measured on phones yet)
These changes are in, but we haven't measured them on a phone, so we're not promising numbers. Tell us if it feels better or worse.
- Rebuilding shaders after an update should no longer max out every CPU core, and continues where it left off if interrupted.
- The screen is held at the game's frame rate on 120 Hz phones.
- Video menus (track and cup previews) use a faster decoder.
- Faster game code carried over from the Switch version.
- New setting: Simpler computer karts, meant to make races against computer players lighter.
- The settings panel scrolls by dragging anywhere.
Known problems
- PowerVR phones (#3): missing models and backgrounds are still not fixed.
- Some Adreno 610 devices can't start Vulkan and use OpenGL instead.
- Error 20100 online for some players is still being looked into. If you get it, press Export Diagnostics right after and attach the zip to an issue.
Installing
Download the APK below and install it over your existing copy. Your saves and settings are kept. Requires Android 10 or newer on a 64-bit ARM device. You still need your own legally dumped PAL RMCP01 Mario Kart Wii disc. Nothing here contains or downloads Nintendo data.
