CTR-AP v0.2.0

CTR Archipelago turns Crash Team Racing into a multiworld randomizer. A check, such as winning a race or breaking an AP box, awards an item that may go to you or another player. Your next character or kart upgrade can arrive from somebody else's game.

At a glance

  • Find AP boxes, individual CTR letters, weapon-use checks and Wumpa rewards.
  • Receive character unlocks, optional boost abilities and stat upgrades.
  • Shuffle Gem Cup tracks, add racer requirements to pads and combine Oxide, Boss and Gem goals.
  • Choose from twenty trap effects, with clearer pad displays, item messages and graphics settings.
  • AP-box contact is more forgiving, and secure connections now check both certificate trust and server name.

Read the full 0.2.0 release notes on AP-Pie for the options, fixes and experimental features.

Where should I start?

  • Joining an existing room: follow the CTR setup guide. Download the client, add your own disc image and use the connection details from your host.
  • Preparing for a new room: build a 0.2.0 YAML, your player settings file, and send it to your host. The YAML guide explains the format.
  • Generating or hosting: install the matching ctr.apworld, the package that adds CTR to Archipelago, and follow the hosting guide. You do not need to install the APWorld just to join as a player.

Watch the CTR setup video or hosting walkthrough. The setup video predates 0.2.0; use the current downloads and written guide alongside it. I'm also making a dedicated CTR 0.2.0 YAML explanation video, coming soon. The CTR reference explains the available systems.

Upgrading and downloads

For new games, use the matching 0.2.0 client, APWorld and YAML with a fresh seed. Back up your existing client folder, including settings and saves, before replacing it. For an ongoing room, check with the host before changing versions; older Alpha seeds are not automatically interchangeable with the final pair.

Download the Windows ZIP or Linux/Steam Deck tarball below. The small archive is expected: it contains the client, matching APWorld and setup/support files. Your own North American (NTSC-U) CTR disc supplies the large game assets. Debug symbols are separate downloads for investigating crashes and are not needed to play.

A raw .bin image works directly. .chd extraction needs Python and chdman. PAL/Japanese discs and cooked 2048-byte .iso images are not supported. Use the current setup instructions if you need more detail.

Practical limitations and testing

Automated checks passed for the final release, including both platform builds, native and APWorld tests, all eleven generation fuzz checks and package verification. Some gameplay and connection scenarios still need community playtesting. Reports will feed into reproduced, verified fixes in matching 0.2.x releases.

  • Steam Deck: leave Fullscreen off if it causes heavy lag. See #260.
  • Reconnecting: large item backlogs may cause a long pause. Include the support bundle when reporting one.
  • Podiums: some characters can appear invisible; see #282.
  • Recorded AI: experimental and off by default. Opponents share up to three recorded lines, so names can repeat. Per-racer assignment, finish-line smoothing and ordinary-crate interaction need further work. AI cannot collect AP check boxes.
  • Custom content: the narrow Baby T Park preview is experimental and off by default. Generalized custom tracks are planned for 0.3.0.
  • Planned for 0.2.1: recorded-AI corrections, Nitro Drop/Red Potion balance improvements and optional checks for breaking every Relic Race time crate.

About this release

With much of my attention on my partner's recovery, I've relied more than usual on AI assistance for this release. Astra coordinated implementation, reviews and release preparation around plans and priorities we had already agreed on.

Reporting a problem

Open a GitHub issue with your client version, platform, seed or YAML and what happened. Include the local support bundle when relevant: run support-bundle.bat on Windows or support-bundle.sh on Linux and inspect it before attaching it. It does not upload automatically.
