User Preferences System 🧠

The AI assistant can now learn and remember your inbox preferences! This enables personalized email management based on your specific needs.

New CLI command:

inboxd preferences --init   # Create preferences file from template
inboxd preferences --edit   # Open in your editor
inboxd preferences --validate  # Check format and line count

Preference types supported:

  • Important people - Senders whose emails should never be auto-deleted
  • Sender behaviors - Rules for specific senders (e.g., "summarize LinkedIn job alerts")
  • Category rules - How to handle newsletters, promotions, financial emails
  • Behavioral preferences - Aggressiveness level, summary style, confirmation thresholds

AI learning capabilities:

  • Explicit feedback auto-saves (e.g., "always delete LinkedIn alerts")
  • Pattern-based suggestions with user confirmation
  • Smart 14-day detection window to avoid stale suggestions
  • Onboarding flow for new users

Files

  • Preferences stored at ~/.config/inboxd/user-preferences.md
  • Natural language markdown format (AI-readable and human-editable)
  • Max 500 lines to fit in context window
  • Automatic backups before overwriting
