A free, open-source interactive world map for visualising transgender rights and legal recognition across countries.
The infrastructure of this project has been built with extensive AI assistance, and all data has been gathered manually. Because of this, I have chosen to make this project free and open source for anyone to contribute if they wish. I will not be taking any profit from this.
Since data is gathered manually, inconsistencies may be present, therefore, this project should NOT be taken as legal advice. I encourage to report any inconsistency that is present.

Every country in the map has the following questions:
- Can a person be sentenced for being trans?
- Is being trans officially classified as a mental illness?
- Can trans people change their legal name?
- Can trans people change their legal gender marker?
- Is a non-binary or third gender option available on official documents?
- Can trans people access HRT?
- Can trans people get gender-affirming surgery?
- Can trans minors access gender-affirming care?
- Can trans people be placed in prisons matching their gender?
- Can trans people serve in the military in their affirmed gender?
- Can trans people marry in their affirmed gender?
- Can trans people adopt children in their affirmed gender?
Each of these questions can have one of the following answers:
- Yes
- Partial/Varies
- No
- Death penalty (where applicable)
- No data
- Other, usually in very specific cases (Such as undetermined or N/A)
Countries present in the map are then coloured based on their predominant colour, with a dynamic legend indicating what each color represents. Users have the choice to filter out the map by question or answer.
The information present on this tool is compiled from the following primary sources:
This information is gathered manually and inconsistencies may be present.
If you encounter any inconsistencies or mistakes with the website or the information in it, please do the following:
- Open a GitHub issue
- Explain the problem, making sure to include as much detail as possible.
- Include sources, images, or any other type of additional information that could help
Corrections are heavily appreciated. If you would like to contribute to this repository, please contact me in one of the methods listed at the end of this file. Any help is appreciated.
The map is rendered at a 1:110 scale. Because of that, countries that are tiny in territory are not included in this project.
As of August 2026, the project currently covers a total of 177 countries and territories.
Because there is no objective way to rank these countries. Although they can be classified and ranked based on laws, the social reality of each country is unique, and therefore, I have chosen not to rank them.
No, the site is entirely free, and I am not gaining money from sources like ads or sponsors. Since I have coded most of the website using assistance from AI, and due to the nature of the project, I have decided to not monetise the project and to rather make it open source and publicly available for anyone to use. In any case, I might set up a donation page (like Ko-fi or BMAC) for the sole purpose of covering the domain costs, but for now, I am the only one financing this project.
This project makes use of the following assets and libraries:
